About The Position

Provides academic guidance to both current and prospective students as a means to ensure their success at LSU and to help define their academic goals. For Academic Counselor 3, this position also provides day-to-day supervision for a team of advisors and reports to the Director of University College.

Requirements

  • Academic Counselor 1: Bachelor's degree (LSU values skills, experience, and expertise; a degree is not required as long as the candidate meets the required years of experience specified in the job description).

  • Obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services.
  • Refer students in need of or seeking assistance with emotional, behavioral, or mental health-related matters to the proper service within the Student Health Center.
  • Immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students, or the appropriate law enforcement agency if a student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others.
  • Create no impression of client or patient confidentiality outside of those rights contained within FERPA.

Responsibilities

  • Provides educational guidance and assistance for students by planning schedules, recommending courses, and determining appropriate solutions for students.
  • Follows through and tracks the advancement of students as they strive to accomplish their academic goals.
  • Provides case management to students who do not meet their educational requirements and offers guidance toward other academic programs.
  • Utilizes various electronic and print-based materials, as well as multiple university databases, to interpret LSU degree programs.
  • Serves as the conduit for students in interpreting and enforcing university policies and procedures that students encounter in University College and other LSU entities.
  • Manages an advisor: student ratio of approximately 1:400 (for Academic Counselor 1) or 1:350 (for Academic Counselor 2 and 3), serving prospective students, new students, re-entry students, transfer students, and other students who are enrolled in University College.
  • Records advising notes in a variety of formats for reference and for referrals to appropriate campus departments and agencies.
  • Guides students through a variety of academic appeals processes and presents these appeals to the administration on behalf of the students.
  • Conducts a variety of academic workshops and public presentations for current and prospective students and parents, including, but not limited to, Bengal Bound Orientation.
  • Provides advising support through the Student Success One Stop Shop as assigned.
  • Assists in training new staff (for Academic Counselor 2 and 3).
  • Acts as a mentor to a defined group of Academic Counselor 1 staff, to assist new staff in professional success within the unit and provide guidance in the areas of professional standards, university policy and procedures, and available resources (for Academic Counselor 2).
  • Serves in a lead role with student programming initiatives (for Academic Counselor 2).
  • Provides day-to-day supervision for a team of advisors (for Academic Counselor 3).
  • Assists Director in onboarding and training new staff (for Academic Counselor 3).
  • Provides guidance and assistance to academic advisors for professional success within the unit and provides guidance in the areas of professional standards, University policy and procedures, and available resources (for Academic Counselor 3).
  • Collaborates with a team of advisors to coordinate, execute, and assess UC programs as needed (for Academic Counselor 3).
  • Performs other duties as assigned by leadership.
