About The Position

The LSU College of Humanities & Social Sciences is seeking to hire one or more Counselor 1 positions for our team. The academic counseling team in the College of Humanities & Social Sciences is responsible for providing academic counseling to all majors being admitted to the College of Humanities & Social Sciences, including prospective new and re-entry students, transfer students, and to approximately 4500 students currently enrolled in the College of Humanities & Social Sciences following a Humanities & Social Sciences curricula and are in need of academic assistance.

  • Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or related behavioral science discipline
  • Experience working with the college-age population in a counseling capacity.

Responsibilities

  • Providing academic counseling to majors admitted to the College, prospective new students, re-entry students, and transfer students. Includes individualized review of University academic advising resources for each student appointment and connecting students with relevant campus and community resources. Targeted academic counseling may be provided to certain subsets of the HSS undergraduate community.
  • General administrative responsibilities including: preparing correct student rosters of candidates for the appropriate degree and ensuring that candidates meet all requirements; serving as liaison with the Office of Admissions and the Office of the University Registrar; and interacting with chairs/ directors and faculty in coordinating student information.
  • Handling all manner of student requests including substitutions of courses in curricula, cross-enrollment requests, academic planning documents for ROTC students, course evaluations for students studying abroad, etc.
  • Responding to various letters of inquiry regarding student matters.
  • Assisting in the assessment of student needs and other student-related research projects.
  • Remaining updated and engaged with professional developments through such avenues as professional literature, professional seminars, and professional organizations.
  • Specialized academic counseling activities to support specific populations within HSS.
  • Supporting the suite of specialized retention activities directed at the HSS population through targeted reach-outs.
  • Connecting with students in academic jeopardy to provide individualized support in reaching academic goals and removing barriers to success.
  • Other activities as assigned by the Dean and Assistant Dean.
  • Assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral , or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency.
