About The Position

Liturgical Press invites applications for the full-time, benefit eligible position of Academic and Spiritual Theology Editor. Liturgical Press is internationally known as a Catholic and ecumenical publisher in prayer and spirituality, Scripture, liturgy, theology, and monastic life. Founded in 1926, the Liturgical Press is the publishing house of Saint John's Abbey, a Benedictine community located within the 3000 acres of woods and lakes of Saint John's University's campus in central Minnesota. The Academic and Spiritual Theology Editor is the lead editorial agent for acquiring and developing academic titles in key areas for the Press, cultivating scholarly relationships, and contributing to the publishing vision and goals collaboratively set by the Editorial Director. The Academic Editor participates in the entire publishing program of the Press (academic, general spirituality, pastoral, monastic), pending the strengths of the successful candidate and complementarity with the strengths of others on the three-person editorial leadership team. Requirements

  • Advanced, research degree in a field related to academic and spiritual theology market subjects that are currently a focus for Liturgical Press.
  • An inquisitive and reflective worldview that will engage creative authors and topics.
  • Solid experience in religious book or periodical publishing, in print and/or electronic formats.
  • Thorough knowledge of Roman Catholic doctrine and practice.
  • Past leadership, administrative and/or managerial experience.
  • Organized and adaptive to various organizational systems and software.
  • Ability to work and thrive within the context of the Liturgical Press offices at Saint John’s Abbey (Saint John’s University) in Collegeville, MN.
  • Travel required as needed, especially to conferences within the purview of the editor.
  • Sitting for prolonged periods of time.
  • Extensive use of computers and keyboard.
  • Occasional walking and lifting may be required.
  • Project an image of service which represents the Order of Saint Benedict and its corporate divisions.
  • Actively cooperate with the character and mission of the Order of Saint Benedict and its corporate divisions.
  • A willingness to maintain a high level of competence.

Responsibilities

  • Acquire and develop products across multiple key areas of strength for the Press, especially leading theological and ecclesial trends and topics, cultivating and supporting current authors while also bringing new authors through the editor’s network of contacts and organizations.
  • Actively contribute to strategic content development at project development and acquisitions team stages, specifically around target readers/users, needs of the academy and sales potential.
  • Guide editorial execution of acquired products that are within the scope of this position, including developmental editing with authors as needed, refinement of product design, and responsiveness to the managing editor, production editor, production coordinator, and marketing team throughout the production and marketing processes.
  • Contribute to the organization of the editorial functions of the Press (in collaboration with clerical staff and editorial leadership), including initiating contracts, managing timelines for print and digital projects, maintaining files, monitoring financial performance, and participating in the activity of evaluating, maximizing and creating new revenue streams.
  • Travel to select conferences throughout the year, with the primary aim of cultivating authors and engaging the market, but also to include participation in sales responsibilities as needed.
