About The Position

The Academic and College Advisor is responsible for fostering a positive, supportive, and enriching educational environment for a diverse group of students in grades 9 through 12. In this 12-month, administrative position, they serve as the primary advisor and college counselor, providing guidance and support on all college-related, academic, extracurricular, social-emotional, and disciplinary matters. In addition to this work, the Academic and College Advisor connects families with school resources and support and is the primary point of contact for parents and students. The Academic and College Advisor serves as a crucial representative of the institution to the wider community. They work daily with Senior School faculty and staff to manage student, parent, and teacher concerns, and are part of a team who relies on each other for judgment, support, and wisdom.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum of five years experience in a relevant position that results in a strong understanding of academic life and school culture, as well as the skills and empathy necessary to effectively counsel adolescents
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to engage effectively with students, parents, faculty, and other members of the school community in a way that is reflective of the school’s culture and that projects professional competence, leadership capability, warmth, and sound judgment

Nice To Haves

  • Masters degree preferred
  • College counseling experience a plus

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a strong presence in the school on a daily basis, working closely with other administrators to set the tone and manage the rhythms of the daily schedule
  • Build close relationships with students and provide support and guidance to help them navigate challenges, identify opportunities for growth and success, and achieve their academic and personal goals
  • Collaborate with other administrators, faculty, and staff to address students' needs, develop policies, and shape the overall student experience
  • Work closely with the Director of Student Life and Head of Senior School to provide support and guidance to students
  • Respond to family inquiries in a timely and helpful manner and connect them with the appropriate resources and support
  • Provide strategic, innovative, and comprehensive college counseling advice to their students during the college research and application process
  • Collaborate on the development and delivery of college counseling materials and presentations to help educate students and families
  • Write counselor recommendations for rising seniors before the start of Grade 12
  • Ensure that the school provides the best possible support for all college applications, including document delivery, school profile, and teacher recommendations
  • Demonstrate a desire for constant professional and personal growth by regularly participating in and seeking out professional learning opportunities
  • Promote school life by participating on academic committees, contributing to department and staff meetings, and presenting at faculty-staff events
