About The Position

The Academic and Career Coach works collaboratively with the Hyde Park ESOL team to assist adult immigrant students in navigating life in the U.S. and accessing resources and opportunities. The goal is to help students obtain new skills, improve computer skills, secure employment or promotions, further their education, and reduce barriers to education and employment. The Coach is responsible for coordinating and administering the goal-setting process, measuring student progress, assisting students with barriers to attendance, helping students obtain jobs through resume and interview preparation, and developing employer relationships. The position also involves maintaining program data in Salesforce and working both remotely and at multiple sites in Hyde Park.

Requirements

  • Experience supporting immigrants from diverse cultural, linguistic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Zoom, Google products, and data entry or willingness and ability to learn systems quickly.
  • The ability to coordinate, analyze, organize, compile, compose, and compute data and information.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective time management skills and ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and accurately.
  • Flexibility, empathy, and patience.
  • Ability to help struggling students with a non-judgmental, asset-based approach.
  • Strong listening skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas, speak, and give instructions clearly and simply to non-native English speakers.
  • Haitian Creole speaking is required.
  • Ability to travel to and around Hyde Park, MA is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in counseling, case management, and/or crisis management with people with varying needs a plus.
  • Experience with job development and career coaching a plus.
  • Familiarity with educational, training, and support resources in the Boston area.

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with other staff to ensure best services for students.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders (students, employers, partner organizations, funders).
  • Create an environment where all students feel heard, can express ideas, learn and problem solve in creative ways.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of orientations, celebrations, and ceremonies.
  • Attend and actively participate in staff and other meetings, team-based projects, and cross-functional projects.
  • Provide tech support for students in both online and in-person classes.
  • Translation/Interpretation between English and Haitian Creole as needed.
  • Meet one-on-one with students to assess goals, create a career plan and follow-up.
  • Advise students on next steps and assist students in making connections to other appropriate programs and employment.
  • Counsel students regarding day-to-day conflicts, barriers or problems that may arise so successful enrollment, attendance and completion of program may be attained.
  • Help students navigate systems such as immigration, healthcare, education, etc.
  • Refer students to appropriate support services such as immigration, childcare, health insurance, and other supports.
  • Complete documentation required by JVS and funders using Salesforce.
  • Maintain up-to-date list of referrals and resources.
  • Understand and access various support systems both inside and outside of JVS and work collaboratively with the JVS coaching community to identify solutions.
