About The Position

Organization Summary Statement: The Office of Student Services in the College of Education (EDUC) at the University of Maryland offers comprehensive academic support and advising for education majors at every stage of their program. Its mission is to guide students through essential milestones, including admission, orientation, course registration, academic planning, graduation requirements, and teacher certification, ensuring they understand and meet all program expectations. The office serves both undergraduate and graduate students by providing individualized advising, resources on academic policies and degree programs, and support in exploring curricular options that align with their academic and professional goals. Position Summary: The Academic Advisor reports to the Assistant Director of the Office of Student Services and is primarily responsible for delivering comprehensive academic advising to all education majors, including the Integrated Master's Certification Program (IMCP) and Terrapin Teacher candidates. This position contributes to campus New Student Orientation programs and provides general advising support to prospective graduate students. The Advisor will support first‑year student retention initiatives within EDUC and assist with data reporting related to teacher education admissions, enrollment trends, and projections. This position is responsible for monitoring student progress toward degree completion in alignment with established college benchmarks and will collaborate with the Assistant Director on recruitment efforts both on and off campus, as well as participate in departmental and college committees. Physical Demands: Sedentary work is performed in a normal office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must be able to read a computer screen and type for extended periods. Must have the ability to walk short distances, and/or drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Two (2) years of experience providing counseling or advising services.
  • Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.
  • Knowledge of best practices in organization and administration.
  • Knowledge of public relations and marketing techniques.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
  • Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in higher education administration, education, counseling, or a related field.
  • Two to three years of professional experience in student-facing roles within higher education, such as student affairs, registration, admissions, orientation, retention initiatives, or career services; and/or experience in teacher education or youth-focused settings, including K–12 classrooms, schools, or community-based educational organizations.
