About The Position

University College (UC) Academic Advising, the advising point of entry for most first time, degree-seeking undergraduate students at Appalachian State University, is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time, 12-month academic advisor. This role involves advising and managing a caseload of approximately 350-400 undeclared students. The advisor will serve as a new student advisor during advising periods and will meet with all required students in their caseload at least once per semester for academic planning. They will also be available for voluntary advising as needed and will monitor students on academic probation. The position includes opportunities for mentorship of new advisors after gaining experience and requires active participation in all training events and professional development sessions. Advisors are expected to stay current with university policies, advising research, and share resources with colleagues. The role also involves serving as a liaison between University College Academic Advising, academic departments, and Student Affairs offices, maintaining accurate and confidential student records, and representing the department at various university functions. Active participation in current and new initiatives, and assistance with special projects are also expected.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution with an emphasis in student affairs, higher education, or related area.
  • Experience working with students in a college setting and a demonstrated commitment to the educational development of students.
  • Advanced technology skills and experience with the ability to quickly learn technical advising tools including Banner 9 and Self Service, DegreeWorks, Scheduling Systems, Slate, Docuware, AsULearn/Canvas, Google Software.
  • Evidence of excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as outstanding organizational, interpersonal, and problem solving skills.
  • Exhibits energy, enthusiasm, a positive approach to work, attention to detail and accuracy, and a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to establish excellent rapport with leaders, colleagues, students and families.
  • Exhibits a high level of ethics, integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism.

Responsibilities

  • Advises and manages a caseload of approximately 350-400 undeclared students on a full-time, 12-month contract.
  • Serves as a new student advisor during the summer, fall and spring new student advising periods.
  • Meets with all required students in the caseload at least once during the semester for academic planning.
  • Available to meet with students who have voluntary advising as needed.
  • Monitors all students in the caseload who are on academic probation.
  • Serves as a mentor to new advisors after gaining advising experience and skills.
  • Attends all training events scheduled for advisors.
  • Stays abreast of university academic policies and procedures, current research and developments in the field of academic advising and shares resources with colleagues.
  • Serves as a liaison between University College Academic Advising, assigned academic departments, and one Student Affairs office.
  • Keeps accurate records of student contacts, documents student visits for accountability purposes, and maintains confidentiality.
  • Establishes and maintains collegial, respectful relationships with leaders, colleagues, students, parents and families.
  • Represents University College Academic Advising at various committees and University-related functions, including open houses and Admissions receptions.
  • Actively participates in all current and new initiatives of University College Academic Advising.
  • Assists with special projects as deemed appropriate by the University College Academic Advising Leadership team.
