About The Position

The Department of English at Texas A&M University is seeking an Academic Advisor II who is excited to support a wide student population. As the sole advisor for the department, you will work with English majors while also advising students from across the university who are completing required English coursework. This role offers the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with students at all stages of their academic journey. In this role, you will empower students to achieve their academic and career goals by clarifying degree requirements, navigating university policies, and supporting retention and student success. While you will work independently in this role, you will be part of a collaborative advising office that values teamwork, shared knowledge, and student‑centered support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Two years of academic advising or related experience.

  • Experience using advising technologies, databases, and reporting tools.
  • Knowledge of project management, coaching principles, and training development.
  • Experience developing and delivering training or professional development related to academic advising.
  • Familiarity with Texas A&M University’s mission, culture, policies, and advising practices.

Responsibilities

  • Advise students on academic goals, majors/minors, and future educational or career options.
  • Guide students through academic policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Review academic records and assist with course selection and exception requests.
  • Provide input on students’ academic standing and probation decisions.
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date student records and advising notes.
  • Proactively engage students through multiple outreach methods to share important deadlines, updates, and events.
  • Connect students with appropriate academic, career, and wellness resources as needed.
  • Monitor student progress toward degree completion and identify students who may need additional support or intervention.
  • Plan and support advising, student success, retention events, and academic campaigns.
  • Use developmental advising strategies to support students’ academic growth and success.
  • Assist with training and sharing information with new staff and student employees in the advising department.
