About The Position

The Academic Advisor I position focuses on engaging first-year engineering students through proactive advising to enhance their success and retention. The advisor is responsible for guiding students in selecting appropriate engineering majors and connecting them with necessary resources. This role involves meaningful interaction with students during the drop/add process and Advanced Registration to ensure adherence to tracking requirements. The advisor will also process probation paperwork, collaborate with other academic advisors, and participate in Preview events to assist incoming students and their families. Additionally, the advisor will manage communication, design informational materials, and direct students to campus resources for internship and job placement. Collaboration within the Office of Undergraduate Student Affairs and with external UF partners is essential for supporting student success and retention.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in education, counseling, or academic field related to the college OR Bachelor's degree in similar fields with one year of relevant experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in advising and counseling students at the undergraduate level, especially freshman level, preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Working knowledge of University of Florida regulations and procedures to facilitate student recruitment and retention.
  • Must apply excellent judgment and exercise confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Engage first-year engineering students through proactive advising.
  • Assist in developing programs to enhance the success and retention of engineering students.
  • Advise and counsel first-year engineering students on major selection and resources.
  • Meet with each student during Advanced Registration to lift holds and ensure adherence to tracking requirements.
  • Process probation paperwork and collaborate with academic advisors for student development during probation.
  • Participate in Preview events, working with first-year students and their families.
  • Manage basic communication and transfer of necessary information to student advisees.
  • Design printed materials and web pages related to major requirements and career planning.
  • Handle inquiries from current and prospective students via phone, email, and other channels.
  • Direct students to necessary resources for internship and job placement.
  • Coordinate activities and engage with students involved in Undergraduate Student Affairs programs.
  • Support freshman retention by providing students with tools and resources for academic and professional success.
  • Develop an academic plan and coach students to overcome obstacles.
  • Connect students to activities and organizations that promote professional development.
  • Work closely with other team members to continually define and develop best practices.
  • Contribute to welcoming and transitioning first-year students through Preview and the Engineering New Student Welcome.
  • Guide advisees towards the value of engagement in student organizations.
  • Positively contribute to the continuous improvement of the Preview experience.
  • Conduct college information sessions during Preview.
  • Provide individual advising to incoming students during Preview.
  • Provide information for parents and families of new students during Preview.
  • Develop strong working relationships with engineering departmental advisors.
  • Engage in the HWCOE advising community through the Engineering Undergraduate Advising Council (EUAC).
  • Serve in EUAC subcommittees or other leadership roles.
  • Engage in the UF advising community through the Undergraduate Advising Council (UAC).
  • Work directly with other UF colleges and units as needed.
  • Pursue opportunities for professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
