About The Position

ATA Services, Inc. is seeking an Abstractor for a contract role with the Maternal Health Program (MHP) of the New Mexico Department of Health. This position will support the NM Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC) by extracting pertinent information from medical records and other sources to create case summaries. The MMRC reviews deaths of New Mexico residents that occur during or within one year of pregnancy to determine pregnancy-related causes, identify contributing factors, and make recommendations for prevention. The Abstractor will provide an objective, uninfluenced view to assist MMRC members in their case reviews.

Requirements

  • Nursing or other clinical experience in obstetrics, antenatal, and postpartum care with an understanding of normal/abnormal processes of pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum and the wide spectrum of factors that can influence maternal outcomes.
  • A strong commitment to health equity and an understanding of the drivers of inequity.
  • A deep working knowledge of and/or lived experience with NM communities of color.
  • Prior experience with Maternal Mortality Review Information Application (MMRIA) or comparable public health abstraction platforms (e.g., disease surveillance systems, mortality review databases, quality reporting tools).
  • Strong, professional communication and organization skills.
  • Computer skills, including data entry experience and ability to navigate a variety of electronic medical record systems.
  • Experience with medical record review (peer review, other mortality review, etc.) to gather and extract relevant information.
  • Flexibility and ability to accomplish tasks in short time frames.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and other confidentiality laws.
  • Interest in collaborating as a member of a multidisciplinary team to serve as an objective, unbiased storyteller.

Responsibilities

  • Accept assignments from the Lead Abstractor and assist in the identification of needed records to be requested by the MMRC Coordinator and contractors.
  • Extract pertinent information from all available records and enter it into the Maternal Mortality Review Information Application (MMRIA) data system.
  • Construct comprehensive, objective, narrative case summaries from the information entered into MMRIA.
  • Assist with identifying key informants who may consent to an interview.
  • Attend operational staff and MMRC case review meetings to provide additional support and information as appropriate to MMRC members during the case reviews.
  • Participate in ongoing training opportunities identified by DOH and CDC related to job duties, health equity, implicit bias, and maintain certification in HIPAA compliance.
  • Maintain high levels of accuracy, attention to detail, and internal consistency across data fields and narrative summaries.
  • Identify missing, contradictory, or unclear documentation and flag gaps requiring follow-up or clarification.
