About The Position

Genesis Marine is a provider of marine transportation services, primarily serving refineries and storage terminals along the Gulf Coast, East Coast, Canada, Great Lakes, Intracoastal Canal, and western river systems of the United States. The company owns and operates two fleets, inland and offshore, with approximately 130 vessels. Genesis Marine emphasizes safety, reliability, and efficiency in its operations, adhering to strict procedures that meet and exceed customer and regulatory requirements. The AB (Able Seaman) role involves a variety of duties that vary depending on the vessel and watch, as directed by the Master. These duties encompass operational tasks such as making up tows and handling lines, maintenance duties like chipping, painting, and repairs, housekeeping responsibilities including cleaning various areas of the vessel, and safety duties such as reporting hazards and participating in safety programs.

Requirements

  • Ability to train on barge transfers including loads and discharges from start to finish
  • Ability to learn and demonstrate knowledge of heater operation, including start up and shut down situations and partlow settings
  • Ability to learn and demonstrate knowledge of hose handling, including hook-up, disconnection and proper slinging
  • Ability to learn and demonstrate knowledge of re-packing pumps, per barge maintenance report, and barge maintenance
  • Strong work ethic
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • TWIC card

Responsibilities

  • Making up the tow
  • Dropping, spotting and switching barges at docks
  • Assisting the vessel and tow in making locks
  • Standing lookout, or riding the head of the tow as a lookout
  • Performing various tasks necessary for tow operations, such as making a coupling, operating winches and ratchets, and line handling, including splicing and throwing lines
  • Chipping and painting vessel and tow
  • Repairing flame screens, cleaning P/V valves, greasing winches, etc., in accordance with the barge checklist
  • Dewatering the barges as necessary
  • Developing a complete knowledge of all heaters
  • Troubleshooting barge problems
  • Developing a complete knowledge of all barges
  • Cleaning the boat
  • Cleaning quarters, including personal quarters
  • Cleaning the wheelhouse and galley
  • Cleaning the heads and companionways
  • Performing other cleaning chores as directed by the Wheelhouse operator on duty
  • Cooking when needed
  • Reporting any hazardous or unsafe condition to the Master and making “on-the-spot” corrections when capable
  • Completing all training required and participation in Safety Programs
