About The Position

This position is responsible for preparing meals for crew members, performing seaman/deckhand duties, and general maintenance as directed. The role requires the ability to manage a budget, maintain the galley, and assist with various shipboard tasks. The work environment involves both indoor and outdoor conditions, potentially in various weather and sea states, and may involve exposure to paints and solvents. Mental demands include mathematical ability for budgeting, attention to detail for safety, and effective communication. Physical demands include sitting for long periods, climbing, stooping, squatting, stepping between vessels, walking, reaching, throwing lines, handling various items, coordinating movements, and the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Correctable vision, color sense, depth perception, and a wide field of vision are also required.

Requirements

  • US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner’s Document with Able Bodied Seaman Special, Limited or Unlimited endorsement required; steward’s department (FH) endorsement.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to prepare nutritional and well-balanced meals for crew. Microwave meals will not be tolerated.
  • Ability to operate and utilize basic hand and hand held power tools.
  • Current TB clearance.
  • High School Diploma or GED, or equivalent is required.
  • Sufficient verbal, reading and writing skills as necessitated by the job (i.e., coordinating tasks with co-workers, receiving instructions from supervisors (s), reading instructions/directions, writing lists/statements/reports).

Nice To Haves

  • STCW 95 endorsement, preferred.
  • Completion of culinary schooling with two (2) years meal preparation experience, preferred.
  • Three (3) years underway galley experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare meals for crew members.
  • Prepare store list and review with Captain. Shop for stores.
  • Maintain monthly budget. Budget must not be exceeded.
  • Perform general maintenance in galley and on vessel to include needle gunning, painting, etc.
  • Perform sanitary duties in galley.
  • Perform seaman/deckhand duties such as handling lines, tow wires, setting blocks, lifting and securing bridles, etc.
  • Assist Chief Engineer/Engineer in engine room.
  • Perform duties as assigned.
