About The Position

Zurich Canada is seeking a Senior or Specialist Underwriter for its Accident & Health team in Toronto. This market-facing role requires deep underwriting expertise and market insights to drive portfolio growth through new and existing broker and customer relationships. The position reports to the Canada Head of Accident & Health. Responsibilities include analyzing and underwriting new and renewal business, collaborating with internal teams on tailored solutions, and leading initiatives in risk selection, pricing, deal structuring, and strategic growth. The role involves supporting client engagement and market expansion within a supportive environment. Zurich Canada utilizes AI tools in its recruitment process, but all hiring decisions are made by qualified professionals. This is a hybrid role requiring three days per week in-person presence, which may include office time or market-facing engagements.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area.
  • OR High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area
  • OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area
  • OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Experience working on time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong business relationships.
  • Demonstrated negotiation, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite and analyze highly complex new and renewal business independently within delegated authority levels.
  • Analyze existing client portfolios, claims data, and product performance to identify growth opportunities while balancing risk appetite and underwriting guidelines.
  • Participate in sales team meetings and represent Zurich at industry events as needed.
  • Conduct market and competitor research to understand industry trends and emerging risks, informing our go-to-market strategy.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, agents, and customers to drive business retention and acquisition.
  • Document broker/client visits and account status in required systems within established time frames.
  • Participate in underwriting and analyzing new and renewal business independently within delegated authority levels.
  • Contribute to a collaborative and supportive team environment.
  • Analyze existing client portfolios, claims data, and product performance to identify growth opportunities and enhance customer value.
  • Collaborate closely with underwriting, claims, and product teams to deliver tailored, innovative solutions and outstanding client service.
  • Support claims teams with coverage expertise and issue resolution.
  • Business travel and extended hours during peak periods, as required.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license.
