About The Position

Communication Specialists provide a unique and vital telecommunications service to the citizens and visitors of Clay County. This position is responsible for receiving incoming emergency calls from the general public, alarm companies and other agencies and for dispatching and coordinating Clay County Public Safety responses ranging from routine to critical. This position requires overtime availability, at times on short notice, and emergency on-call to include activation status within the Emergency Operations Center during an emergency situation.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One year of continuous work experience in a professional customer service call center.
  • Current American Heart Association CPR certification (or must obtain within six months of hire).
  • Valid Florida driver’s license with clean driving record.
  • Read, write, speak and understand the English language fluently
  • Be familiar with Clay County jurisdictional boundaries and surrounding counties and agencies
  • Ability to multitask
  • Ability to deal with the public, including upset individuals in an emergency situation, calmly and in a professional manner
  • Ability to be an effective listener and to provide meaningful instruction
  • Must attain licensure as a Florida 9-1-1 Public Safety Telecommunicator
  • Must successfully complete 32-hour Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) course within first year of employment.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 90% of the time.
  • The person in this position needs to be able to frequently move about indoors to access files, personnel, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity and communications equipment such as a copy machine, computer printer, phone, TDD and radio.
  • This position communicates constantly with the public, supervisors, and emergency services personnel, including during emergency situations and under extreme stress. Must be able to exchange information accurately and calmly.
  • Must be able to inspect, assess, perceive, analyze and evaluate verbal and written information and to utilize sound professional judgement in the deployment of resources.
  • Occasionally moves boxes and/or files weighing up to 10 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s Degree in Emergency Management or Communications (Preferred).
  • Previous experience in Emergency Communications (Preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Delivers the assurance of calm, effective and accurate assistance to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
  • Receives and processes requests for emergency and non-emergency response for police, fire and emergency medical services in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Dispatches units to fire and emergency medical situations.
  • Serves as the first point of contact for administrative functions of the Department, ensuring callers are treated with courtesy and respect and are forwarded to the proper Division.
  • Keeps on-duty supervisor informed of all situations.
  • Ensures confidentiality of information obtained within the scope of the position.
  • Maintains all records, logs and documentation according to current policies and legal requirements of the Communications Division.
  • Performs multiple tasks independently, while maintaining a high proficiency level utilizing radio systems, Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and E911 systems.
  • Ensures compliance with all training requirements and meetings as directed by supervisor.
  • Remains compliant with policies, procedures and memos.
  • Reviews and remains familiar with the TDD, radio, computer and phone functions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
