About The Position

Employees in this job supervise Saline County Emergency Communications emergency dispatch operations. The work is performed through the application of a body of knowledge related to procedures, practices, manuals, policies, rules, regulations, and laws, and the materials and equipment of the emergency dispatcher service. The work requires knowledge of supervisory techniques, personnel policies and procedures, related management disciplines, emergency dispatch practices and terminology, and instruction and guidelines of the work area. The employee works within general methods and guidelines and exercises considerate independent judgment to select appropriate courses of action and discretion in supervising the work of subordinate employees. This position requires 12-hour shift work, with no implication or guarantee of a particular or continued shift assignment and are subject to change to meet the needs of the department.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Educational Development certificate (GED) with knowledge of a specialized field (however acquired) such as emergency medical dispatch, emergency communications, strong computer/typing skills as well as the ability to multitask, plus 3 years related experience and/or training, and 2 years related management experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, clients, public and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of known variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram formats.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and coordinates activities of the shift by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of subordinate employees.
  • Evaluates and verifies employee performance through the review of completed work assignments and work techniques.
  • Identifies staff development and training needs and ensures that training is obtained.
  • Documents any occurrence of inadequate job performance by communications personnel and problems or unusual situation's that arise during shifts for supervisor’s review and ensures that proper labor relations and conditions of employment are maintained.
  • Monitors, directs, and participates in emergency dispatching work.
  • Designs, revises, and/or reviews work instructions for the area, and interprets them for subordinate employees.
  • Prepares reports and composes correspondence relative to the work area.
  • Oversees and ensures the maintenance of recordkeeping and/or filing systems for the work area.
  • Ensures work product quality and quantity control in accordance with guidelines and directives.
  • Develops alternative strategies to address and resolve a variety of issues and problems.
  • Releases confidential information and/or materials to authorized personnel according to work area instructions.
  • Interprets existing and proposed laws, policies, and procedures as they relate to the work area.
  • Maintains favorable public relations.
  • May occasionally perform any task assigned to subordinate staff, consistent with any licensing or certification requirements.
  • Directs and/or participates in the development of goals and objectives of the work area, and makes recommendations for changes in policies, rules and regulations in order to ensure effective operations.
  • Directs and participates in the establishment, administration, and evaluation of programs or services.
  • This position, as are all positions within the 911 Emergency Communications Department, subject to mandatory staffing regulations set forth by the 911 Board.
  • Writes a narrative report documenting problems or unusual situations to be delivered to and reviewed by the Communication's Manager and OEM/911 Director.
  • Passes on any information involving an emergency or routine call which may be pertinent to the next shift.
  • An essential duty of this position is the ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

  • Bilingual pay of $2,080 is available once proficiency has been established.
