We are hiring a person to teach science to students in grade 8. This position can incorporate a degree of applicant preference, skill, and expertise, but will need to cover the following areas: Foundational science instruction for students who are continuing to build their understanding of core concepts such as physical science, life science, earth and space science, and scientific inquiry, with an emphasis on developing curiosity, observation, and analytical thinking. Mid-level units that deepen content knowledge and allow for alignment between student interest and instructor expertise, including opportunities for hands-on experimentation, lab work, and project-based learning in alignment with the broader 6–12 science vision. Potential niche or advanced units that extend learning into specialized topics, interdisciplinary connections, or high school readiness, as aligned with the needs of the TSAS curricular catalog. This is a full-time position that may only be filled by someone who comes through the interview process embodying and subscribing to values, habits, and mindsets of: Dynamic teaching in a secondary setting, preferably in a diverse public school that serves students from a variety of backgrounds and levels of available resources and abilities. Fierce dedication to working expansively as part of a team of teachers and support staff in a dynamic, kind, empathetic, professional, liberatory way. Operative knowledge of scientific concepts, methodologies, and pedagogical approaches, including inquiry-based and experiential learning. Well-researched, familiar knowledge of TSAS as a unique school with a rich legacy, strengths, assets, opportunities for growth, realistic public school challenges, and resource limitations. A true desire to see all students succeed, regardless of demographic characteristics, in a way that causes growth toward self actualization and a life of joy, choice, and advocacy. Openness to creative, often DIY means of lab development, resource acquisition, collaboration, curricular development, and problem solving. TSAS is a free public charter school with small class sizes that prioritizes innovation and teacher autonomy. Applicants should be enthusiastic about experimentation, student-centered instruction, project-based learning, building strong relationships, and developing equitable success strategies to serve all students.
