About The Position

St. John School is seeking a dedicated individual to serve as a 7th Grade Religion and 7th-8th Grade Social Studies Teacher, as well as the Yearbook Coordinator. This full-time, exempt position reports to the Principal and is responsible for fostering a faith-based learning environment, implementing curriculum, managing classroom activities, and overseeing the production of the school yearbook. The role requires a commitment to Catholic identity, instructional excellence, and positive student engagement.

Requirements

  • Respects and understands a Catholic school philosophy
  • Bachelor’s Degree with Valid Teaching Credential (working toward CA credential if from out of the state)
  • Able to complete Live Scan process
  • Negative TB test
  • CPR certified
  • Diocese of San Diego Basic Catechist Certificate (if required)
  • Strong commitment to the mission and values of Catholic education.
  • Experience with digital publishing software (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, or publisher-specific software) and digital photography.
  • Ability to juggle multiple deadlines and coordinate schedules of events
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills to work with administration, faculty, parents, and student staff.
  • Maintains emotional control under stress.
  • Spend the majority of the day standing in the classroom.
  • Frequently hold objects while standing.
  • Sit on an occasional basis when developing lesson plans, grading, etc.
  • Walk through the classroom and maneuver in tight spaces.
  • Walk on both even and uneven surfaces.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and support the mission of the Catholic Church and Catholic education.
  • Plan, guide, and evaluate the learning process within the framework of the school's philosophy, mission, and curriculum.
  • Model Gospel values and contribute to the school's faith community through participation in religious services and activities.
  • Obtain and maintain the Diocese of San Diego Basic Catechist Certificate.
  • Plan and implement a program of instruction for 7th Grade Religion and 7th-8th Grade Social Studies that adheres to curriculum standards.
  • Record unit and lesson plans in the curriculum map or other planning tool.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with students.
  • Organize instruction and materials to maximize student time on task and motivate learning.
  • Plan and implement a differentiated program of study to meet individual student needs.
  • Utilize appropriate materials and technological resources to engage students in learning.
  • Employ a variety of effective instructional methods and continuously update curriculum and methods.
  • Use data to drive instruction.
  • Encourage student enthusiasm for learning and the development of good study habits.
  • Use a variety of formative and summative assessments to evaluate student progress.
  • Maintain a functional and pleasant learning environment.
  • Collaborate with peers, learning support team, leadership team, and administration.

  • Provide lesson plans for substitute teachers and maintain an emergency sub folder.
  • Manage the page layout, design, copywriting, and editing processes for the yearbook using Canva.
  • Select, organize, and archive digital photos of school events.
  • Develop and maintain a yearbook production schedule to meet publication deadlines.
  • Involve middle school students in the yearbook production process through a weekly elective class.
  • Ensure yearbook content reflects the mission, values, and teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Highlight faith-based events and activities in the yearbook.
  • Schedule photographers for school events.
  • Act as a point of contact for parents and students regarding yearbook content submissions.
  • Develop and practice reasonable rules of classroom behavior and apply positive discipline approaches.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Share responsibility for student supervision in all areas of the school.
  • Uphold, adhere to, and enforce Diocesan and school policies and procedures.
  • Actively participate in the WASC/WCEA accreditation process.
  • Actively participate in extra duties as described in the staff handbook.
  • Respect the confidentiality of records and information.
  • Maintain appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance.
  • Work cooperatively with parents to strengthen the educational program.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other staff members.
  • Attend school-wide functions and special events as required.
  • Handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Keep the administration informed of areas of need and concern.
  • Maintain professionalism in dress and hygiene.
  • Use technology only for school-related business or functions.
