About The Position

Town School for Boys is seeking a full-time Humanities (integrated history and English) Head Teacher and Advisor for 6th grade from August 19th - December 18th, 2026 as a leave replacement. The ideal candidate will possess the skills to connect history, writing, and literature to students' lives while also valuing guiding students through the emotional journey of their middle school years. The position involves collaborating closely with other 6th-grade teachers, the humanities department teachers in other grades, and the Head of Upper School. Collaboration with the librarians and educational technologists is also expected. In addition, this position involves mentoring and partnering with a full-time Resident Teacher each year who is part of the New Teacher Institute. The Humanities 6 Head Teacher will work closely with the Director of Teacher Development and Strategic Initiatives in supporting the Resident Teacher’s professional development. As an advisor, the successful applicant will lead morning advisory, support students during study hall, supervise during snack/recess, and facilitate student-led parent conferences in the fall. School-wide responsibilities include recess and lunch supervision, and grade level and faculty meetings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Minimum of two years of teaching experience.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including communicating effectively with all constituents in a school environment, including students, co-workers, and parents.
  • Well-versed in the use of technology tools and Google Suite applications for teaching.
  • Engagement in cultural competency development, including integrating diversity and global awareness, is expected.
  • Adaptability, honesty, self-reliance, teamwork, dependability, flexibility, willingness to listen and learn, work ethic, determination, persistence, problem-solving skills, and congeniality are essential.
  • Must complete background screening and verification.

Nice To Haves

  • Teaching credential and/or Master's Degree preferred.
  • Degree in the discipline of English, History or a related field.
  • Prior experience teaching humanities to Upper School (Grades 5-8) students is preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of the instruction of history, writing, grammar, spelling, and reading comprehension.
  • Passion for working with middle school boys.
