About The Position
The Lansing School District is seeking a 6-12 English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher to join their team. This role is crucial for supporting students who may have limited formal schooling, migrant backgrounds, and low literacy levels, helping them transition into a secondary school setting. The teacher will provide focused literacy instruction in English and sheltered academic content to ensure successful integration. Key aspects of the role include establishing a safe and nurturing learning environment that values students' background knowledge, language, and culture, and orienting students and families to the local culture, school system, and community. Collaboration with other staff, parents, and volunteers is essential to provide the best educational experience for all students.
Requirements
- Valid Michigan Teacher Certificate with High School ESL endorsement (required)
- Successful teaching experience with Multilingual Learners (MLs)
- Ability to support and promote academic instruction in the four domains of the English language
- Demonstrated ability to work with students from a variety of culture and linguistic backgrounds, age, and language/academic proficiency levels
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and cooperatively with administrators, teachers, students and staff as well as under appropriate supervision
- Demonstrated ability to work well in a fast paced environment with a high degree of flexibility
- Demonstrated ability to maintain standards of professional conduct and work ethics including attendance, punctuality and performance is required
- Demonstrated ability to actively seek opportunities to grow professionally

Responsibilities
- Deliver ESL/ELD instruction to Multilingual Learner students by language proficiency levels to support their English language acquisition and increase academic achievement
- Align supplementary curriculum to the WIDA English language development standards and pedagogy
- Use data to guide and effectively differentiate instruction
- Build relationships with students and parents to ensure a safe, welcoming, and engaging learning environment
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of students for evaluation purposes and progress monitoring
- Work in coordination with designated staff in the program to ensure that the procedures to welcome new MLs are observed and followed
- Work collaboratively with school administrators, counselors, teachers to provide opportunities that support the cognitive, physical, emotional, social, and communication development of ML students
- Facilitate and encourage a learning environment that fosters successful social and academic experiences related to language proficiency and acculturation processes
- Learn and grow by incorporating feedback from school leaders, colleagues, students, and professional development sessions
- Other duties as assigned to best support the Lansing School District mission
