About The Position

This is a unique chance to join the crew of the Bayne Sound Connector, the only cable ferry within our fleet. This position is in Buckley Bay, within the desirable Comox Valley region, this role offers an ideal coastal location with easy access to Vancouver Island’s outdoors, communities, and amenities. In this role, you’ll be responsible for maintaining, monitoring, and repairing engine room machinery, equipment, and spaces on board. You’ll work in a hands-on environment where your expertise directly supports safe and reliable service. As a casual officer with BC Ferries, you will be guaranteed a minimum of 15 days of work per month.

Requirements

  • Transport Canada 4th Class Motor Certificate of Competency (CoC) or higher — or an equivalent CoC from a country recognized under a reciprocal agreement with Transport Canada
  • Valid Seafarers Medical
  • Ability to understand and create working diagrams that accurately explain system functions
  • Ability to diagnose basic technical problems in a logical manner and to initiate corrective action
  • Ability to identify inventory requirements, determine appropriate action, prioritize in accordance with project planning and operational requirements and apply maintenance schedules
  • Ability to respond in a calm and assertive manner in emergency situations
  • Ability to liaise with all shipboard departments to promote effective vessel operation
  • Ability to complete tasks in a safe, logical and timely manner
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to locate and comprehend technical and non-technical information, and communicate it in a concise manner to ensure understanding
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures regarding environmental protection regulations (including Oil Spill Contingency and Hazardous Waste Management)
  • Knowledge of layout and operation of all ship systems, including but not limited to propulsion, electrical and piping, both ancillary and auxiliary
  • Knowledge of proper operation of communication equipment and radio protocol

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
  • 12 months experience on vessels over 300 tonnes

Responsibilities

  • Carry out pre-sailing routine; starts up main engines and/or engine room machinery; complete shipboard checks; and shut down engines and machinery at the end of day
  • Conduct watchkeeping duties including monitoring pressure levels, temperature levels, and condition of all equipment; maintains fuel, lube oil, air and water levels; takes samples; handles chemicals; cleans related filters; and checks all plumbing and electrical systems throughout the vessel
  • Observes and records information in engine room logs and daily workbook; completes inspection check-off lists, maintenance logs, battery logs and safety equipment inventory
  • Performs routine maintenance on all deck, engine room, catering machinery and equipment; troubleshoots and repairs mechanical breakdowns; and assists with the overhaul of major components
  • Oversees and assists in the transfer of fuel, lube oil and waste oil; takes soundings
  • Assists in the annual refit; test runs emergency generator, fire sprinkler, bilge and ballast pumps; ensures submersible bilge pump and compartment valves are working; services emergency escape breathing gear; controls stores and inventory; and trains Assistant Engineers
  • Cleans, washes and paints engine room equipment and spaces as required
  • Performs occasional tasks including servicing sewage system and purifiers; tests fuel injectors; and drains and cleans injector cooling tanks
  • Performs the duties of Junior Watchkeeper or Engine Room Assistant when required
  • Participates in fire and boat drills; and performs emergency duties as assigned
  • Provides orientation, guidance and informal training to other employees
  • Performs other related duties as assigned from time to time
