About The Position

Support the Lancaster County 4-H team in providing high-quality positive youth development program experiences for existing as well as new youth audiences. The 4-H Lancaster County Summer Assistant will be responsible to the 4-H Educator.

Requirements

  • Must be a team player who can work with diverse youth and adults.
  • Possess an understanding of youth development; be able to effectively interact with youth.
  • Possess knowledge of educational principles and presentation preparation skills; ability to plan and teach activities and educational programs.
  • Possess good communication skills needed for group presentations and individual communication with members, parents, leaders, teachers, and agency staff.
  • Possess computer skills for creating documents and marketing pieces.
  • The candidate must be able to carry equipment and educational materials and supplies, with or without accommodation.
  • Applicant must be willing to work flexible hours.

  • A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to communicate professionally (oral and written) with Spanish-speaking youth and volunteers desired.
  • Completed or enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in youth development, education, science, engineering, volunteer development or another related field.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with undergraduate coursework/enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in education, agricultural science, engineering or another related field.
  • Familiarity with the 4-H Program is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Lancaster County and City community is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development of new STEM 4-H programs across all delivery modes (school, after school, day camps, clubs)
  • Enhance program quality through training and support for all 4-H volunteers with particular emphasis on new volunteers in 4-H clubs in transition.
  • Work with the Lancaster County 4-H team to plan, deliver and evaluate local 4-H educational programs and supporting activities such as contests and fundraisers.
  • Assist the 4-H Extension Educator in reaching new audiences in accordance with the Penn State University Affirmative Action Policy.
  • Participate in county, regional or state events as appropriate.
  • Provide support at 4-H events by recording registration, chaperoning, conducting workshops and assisting with the management of shows and contests.
  • Monitor children and be responsible for the whereabouts, supervision, and safety of all children registered/in attendance for the program.
  • Support 4-H program marketing and promotion for outreach to new youth audiences across Lancaster County.
  • Submit work time and travel reports for reimbursement by due date.
  • Work with Lancaster County Extension Educator and community leaders, connecting with youth organizations to expand program outreach to new and underserved audiences in accordance with Penn State University Affirmative Action Policy.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate age appropriate 4-H events, activities, and projects for youth at local, area and state 4-H events.
  • Assist with survey data entry as needed.
  • Work cooperatively with other staff in planning and conducting programs, activities, and other special events.
