About The Position

Entry and development classification responsible for the labor-intensive preparation and support work required for shipboard preservation. This is where brush-and-roll painting, basic trade knowledge, and CVN ship knowledge are learned.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and write effectively.
  • Minimum of 6 months in a laborer, warehouse, or field working position
  • Ability to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to workplace safety.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Lift and carry up to 60 pounds.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Continuous visual awareness and mental focus.
  • Ability to work 8–12-hour shifts.
  • Availability to work 5–7 days per week, including overtime as needed.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening.
  • Required physical examination and respirator fit testing.
  • Subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Background check, including verification of the past seven years of employment history.

Responsibilities

  • Report on time with required PPE and ready to work.
  • Follow direction from the Lead, Foreman, First-Class, or Second-Class Painter.
  • Learn to locate spaces using compartment numbers, decks, frames, access routes, and posted shipboard information.
  • Wrap and mask machinery, piping, valves, cables, electrical equipment, lights, labels, identification plates, deck coverings, ventilation openings, and completed surfaces.
  • Build, maintain, repair, and remove containment using approved materials.
  • Manually move paint, thinner, pumps, hoses, tools, ventilation equipment, lighting, ladders, consumables, and waste.
  • Stage materials without blocking access, firefighting equipment, passageways, or emergency egress.
  • Scrape loose or defective coatings, sand and feather edges, perform approved cleaning and surface preparation, wipe down and vacuum surfaces, and remove chips, dust, debris, and spent material.
  • Support Pump Operators and Sprayers with hose movement, material staging, equipment setup, and cleanup.
  • Maintain continuous housekeeping and protect completed work.
  • Learn proper use of brushes, rollers, extension handles, containers, and mixing tools.
