About The Position

The NY Foundling’s Identity & Acceptance Program offers free therapeutic services including individual, group, and family therapy, as well as psychiatric services for LGBTQIA+ youth ages 0-21. Services are provided at no cost, irrespective of insurance or immigration status, to ensure accessibility. Remote services are available based on client needs. The program operates from two main sites: Brooklyn (111 Livingston Street, Brooklyn NY 11201) and East Harlem (109 E. 115th Street, New York 10029). In addition to mental health services, the program offers free gender-affirming clothing, wellness supplies, and various events and workshops throughout the year for clients and the community. This position is for a 2nd-year MSW intern for Fall 2024/Spring 2025.

Requirements

  • 2nd Year MSW or MHC student
  • Strong interest, connection, and commitment to working with the LGBTQIA+ community.
  • Desire to work with youth and families.
  • Creative approach to interventions.
  • Understanding of trauma and intersectionality, and its impact on one's lived experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from a U.S. accredited educational institution or Credential Evaluation for a non-U.S. educational institution.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual preferred (primary language needs: English, Spanish, ASL, French)
  • Prior group facilitation or other clinical experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive client intakes, including administering mental health screenings for anxiety, depression, ADHD, and trauma (e.g., GAD7, PHQ9, CPSS-V, Vanderbilt Assessment).
  • Provide supportive counseling to a caseload of 1 to 3 LGBTQIA+ youth and their families (birth/chosen and/or foster families), which may include individual therapy, dyadic (parent and child), and collateral (parent-only) sessions.
  • Co-facilitate at least one youth and/or parent support group.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops and community events.
  • Attend community coalition meetings and community events on behalf of the agency/program.
  • Conduct community outreach to recruit new families.
  • Specific student assignments will be determined in collaboration with the practicum instructor, task supervisor, and student, based on skill level, learning needs, interests, and program needs.
