About The Position

Athens City School District has a vacancy for a 2nd Grade Teacher at East Elementary. The role involves planning, implementing, and evaluating learning experiences to meet instructional goals, providing direction and support for student development, and actively involving parents and colleagues as teaching partners. The teacher will ensure the learning process is guided towards adopted curricular goals, analyze student needs to adjust the curriculum, and prepare sequential daily lesson plans. They will present material using various approaches to stimulate interest, incorporate technology, and establish a structured learning environment that fosters positive self-concept and well-being. Strategies to motivate problem-solving and logical reasoning skills will be used, along with positive feedback to encourage self-reliance and responsibility. Collaboration with Guidance Counselors for social and emotional development, maintaining rapport with parents and students, and providing progress reports are key aspects. The teacher will also participate in IEP development, collaborate with special services staff, ensure student safety, promote care of school property, maintain student conduct standards, and participate in staff meetings and professional development activities.

Requirements

  • A valid State of Ohio teacher's license appropriate for the assignment.
  • Meet all current health requirements including a negative tuberculosis test.
  • Evidence of a clear record as determined by the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and/or Federal Bureau of Investigation.
  • Evidence of organizational and teaching skills.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate appropriate learning experiences to achieve the school district's instructional goals and objectives.
  • Provide direction and support to help students mature and make appropriate choices to realize their intellectual, social, and vocational potentials.

  • Perform all assigned duties according to the policies, rules and regulations of the Athens City School Board of Education and the Ohio Department of Education.
  • Comply with all local and Federal mandates.
  • Demonstrate broad subject matter competence and teaching proficiency.
  • Ensure the learning process is guided toward the adopted curricular goals, objectives, and proficiencies.
  • Analyze student needs and adjust the curriculum to address individual learning patterns.
  • Prepare and carry out clear, useable, and sequential daily lesson plans that reflect the graded course of study.
  • Present material using a variety of approaches, techniques, and media aids to stimulate interest, enthusiasm, and curiosity about subjects and events.
  • Incorporate efficient use of technology in the classroom.
  • Establish a structured learning environment for students that fosters a positive self-concept and sense of wellbeing.
  • Use strategies that motivate children to develop problem solving and logical reasoning skills.
  • Give students positive feedback that encourages self-reliance and personal responsibility for their educational activities and interpersonal relationships.
  • Work with Guidance Counselors to ensure appropriate student progress with social and emotional development.
  • Attempt to develop rapport and maintain the confidence or parents and students.
  • Provide periodic progress reports to parents using telephone calls, notes, interim reports, report cards, and conferences, etc.
  • Arrange to be available to parents and students for educational purposes beyond the instructional day, when requested.
  • Maintain complete and accurate classroom records as required by law, district policy, or administrative directive.
  • Ensure the confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Complete appropriate student referral forms for possible assessment, as needed.
  • Consult with the Intervention Assistance Team (IAT), as needed.
  • Participate as a team member with the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP) for each student identified as disabled.
  • Collaborate with special services staff regarding instructional modifications, classroom adjustments, and/or other methods that support the attainment of educational goals and inclusion of identified students with disabilities.
  • Provide close supervision, take reasonable precautions to ensure student safety.
  • Promote the proper care of school property, equipment, textbooks, supplies, and other materials.
  • Account for school resources used by students.
  • Help communicate school rules to students.
  • Maintain high standards for student conduct and enforce discipline according to classroom/school policy and the due process rights of students.
  • Share in the responsibility for authorized committee work and program activities, when requested.
  • Suggest books, equipment, instructional materials, or teaching techniques that will enhance the educational process.
  • Prepare the assigned classroom at the beginning of the year.
  • Retrieve inventory of supplies and equipment as required.
  • Store equipment and supplies at the end of the school year.
  • Participate in staff meetings and inservice training.
  • Review literature and participate in variety of professional activities (e.g., professional associations, course work, workshops, seminars, etc.) to keep current with promising research and effective instructional strategies.
  • Share knowledge with colleagues.
  • Participate in afterschool programs (e.g., open house, parent conferences, etc.).
  • Voluntarily support parent organization activities as time permits.
  • Serve as a role model for students.
  • Demonstrate responsibility, citizenship, respect, and courtesy.
  • Perform other specific job-related duties, as directed.
