About The Position

As an Inside Machinist at Steel America, a business unit of Colonna’s Shipyard, Inc., you will be responsible for performing precision machining tasks to repair, modify, or fabricate components. This role involves operating a variety of machine tools and equipment to meet specifications and working under the guidance of senior machinists or supervisors to ensure high-quality and timely completion of projects. The position is located onsite in Norfolk, VA and will often require hours beyond a standard work week with flexible schedule availability to support production/operations. Position may require limited travel.

Requirements

  • Must have at least 3 years of experience as an inside machinist.
  • Must have a general knowledge of precision machining, blueprint reading, and quality control.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in operating manual machine tools such as lathes, mills, and grinders.
  • Ability to lift heavy materials, stand for extended periods, and operate machinery in a shop environment.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and measure parts to precise tolerances.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous technical training highly preferred.
  • Relevant certifications in machining or a related field are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate lathes, milling machines, grinders, and other machine tools to produce or repair metal components.
  • Assist in performing precision machining tasks using manually operated equipment such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and boring mills to fabricate, modify, and repair metal components to exact specifications.
  • Repair and modify shipboard components such as shafts, bearings, valves, and other mechanical parts.
  • Fabricate custom parts as required, ensuring adherence to design specifications and tolerances.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to determine machining requirements.
  • Verify measurements and tolerances before and after machining to ensure compliance.
  • Set up and adjust machine tools and cutting equipment for each task.
  • Perform routine maintenance on machining equipment to ensure optimal performance and longevity, addressing any mechanical issues as they arise.
  • Inspect machined parts and assemblies using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges to ensure they meet specifications and tolerances.
  • Work effectively as part of a team, supporting senior technicians and coordinating with other trades to ensure timely project completion.
