About The Position

This internship position is for current 2L law students applicants who have completed one full year of law school prior to their internship start date for the Fall upcoming year. The 23rd Judicial District Attorney's Office is the newest DA’s Office in the state, representing three counties and almost 400,000 Coloradoans. The office is situated between Denver and Colorado Springs, offering access to both urban amenities and outdoor recreational activities. Douglas County, part of the jurisdiction, is recognized for its high quality of life and health and wellness. The large jurisdiction spans urban, suburban, and rural areas, offering a variety of communities. The 2L internship program offers law students a unique opportunity to conduct meaningful work on real criminal cases, working alongside experienced prosecutors. Interns can expect to be involved in all aspects of criminal prosecution from the investigative stage through trial, including cases involving murder, sexual assault, aggravated robbery, and other violent crimes. Interns will have opportunities to research legal issues, assist in drafting pleadings, observe courtroom proceedings, review new felony filings, and prepare exhibits for trial. The program is designed for law students contemplating a career in criminal prosecution, with the goal of preparing them to return as 3L interns and eventually as deputy district attorneys.

Requirements

• Currently attending law school.
• Must have completed their first year of law school prior to the internship start date.
• Ability to work around law school schedule (generally 8 hours a day, 2-3 days a week, with accommodations possible).

Responsibilities

• Conduct meaningful work on real criminal cases.
• Become involved in all aspects of criminal prosecution from the investigative stage through trial.
• Research novel and interesting legal issues.
• Assist in drafting corresponding pleadings.
• Observe courtroom proceedings where legal issues are litigated.
• Review new felony filings for potential evidentiary challenges.
• Prepare exhibits for trial.
