About The Position

This position is responsible for implementing, organizing, and planning an appropriate instructional program for a classroom. This position is expected to encourage and guide student’s intellectual development by combining the instructors unique pedagogical and professional experiences with the program of study. This position is part of the Certified team and Building principal.

Requirements

  • Must be a commissioned, non-probationary officer with the Olathe Police Department.
  • Must have a minimum of ten (10) years of law enforcement experience by August 1st, 2026.
  • Must have a rating of “Valued Performer” or higher on their most recent performance appraisal.
  • Must meet and maintain all qualifications and certifications required by Olathe Police Department Administrative Regulations, Olathe City Ordinances, Kansas Statutes, and Federal Regulations.
  • Must meet and maintain all requirements for instruction per the Kansas State Department of Education.
  • Must have a bachelor’s degree.
  • This assignment is a five-year rotational position and requires a minimum two-year commitment.
  • Must submit a memorandum including the reason for wanting to be a Public Safety Academy Instructor, why the officer feels qualified to fill this position, and what the officer will be able to contribute to the partnership of the Olathe School District and the Olathe Police Department.
  • Must successfully complete a selection process that will include, but may not be limited to, an oral interview, a 10-15-minute classroom presentation to be determined, and a review of personnel file and productivity reports.
  • Excellent listening, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
  • High degree of confidentiality, motivation, and responsibility.
  • Highly collaborative team player.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, etc.).
  • Ability to identify areas of improvement and opportunity and follow-up to obtain results.

Responsibilities

  • Identifying, developing, and delivering instruction in the Olathe High School’s 21st Century Public Safety Academy program, including Introduction to Public Safety, Law Enforcement level 1, Law Enforcement level 2, and mentoring a Public Safety Senior Capstone project.
  • Teaching methods that resonate with various learning styles, provide informal counseling, and act as a communications liaison between law enforcement and the Olathe School District.
  • Maintaining the proper level of fitness required to meet the physical demands of this position.
  • Facilitating learning activities so that students learn the principles, theory, skills, and work ethic necessary to become proficient for entry level positions.
  • Developing and executing lesson plans that lead toward student mastery of program competencies in the Health Science CTE Pathway.
  • Developing and updating curriculum as needed.
  • Preparing orders for the purchase of supplies, instruments, equipment, and instructional materials necessary to support the learning activities of the program.
  • Maintaining inventory and repair records and ensuring the safe and proper operation and maintenance of instruments and equipment.
  • Creating a positive learning environment.
  • Monitoring, assessing, and advising learners on technical and academic progress and performance.
  • Remaining informed of new trends, methods, materials, instruments, and equipment in the health science industry.
  • Actively participating in all professional development activities as required by the school district.
  • Integrating Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) leadership activities into the academy.
  • Using current academic and industry practices in assigned courses of instruction.
  • Developing and upgrading lesson material, training aids and maintaining equipment within assigned course of instruction.
  • Assisting in the recruitment and placement of learners.
  • Attending technical update classes annually to maintain certifications as needed.
  • Analyzing and interpreting test data.
  • Working with district CTE Coordinator to accurately report state and federal reporting requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
