About The Position

Culver Academies is a private boarding school seeking diverse talent to support its mission and enrich its learning environment. This role is for individuals looking to complete school-required internships as part of their summer staff experience. Culver Summer Schools & Camps (CSSC) offers a unique program in a beautiful 1,800-acre setting on the shores of Lake Maxinkuckee, Indiana. Each summer, nearly 1,400 young people from around the world, ages 7-17, develop positive self-esteem through accomplishment and self-discipline in a high-challenge, high-support environment for learning leadership skills. CSSC employs 450 dedicated professionals each summer with a 65% staff retention rate, offering meaningful connections and the chance to make a positive difference in children's lives.

Requirements

  • Graduate of High School or equivalent, at least 18 years of age.
  • Desire and ability to work with children/teenagers.
  • Demonstrate honesty, self-discipline, consideration, cooperation, and strong leadership skills at all times.
  • Be an efficient communicator and positive role model.
  • Maintain a positive and respectful attitude towards coworkers, campers/students, and parents.
  • Know and enforce the Rules and Regulations, in addition to all Safety protocols and procedures.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with all campers/students and staff.
  • Consistently report to work on time and in proper attire, including proper grooming, to perform assigned duties.
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance in the form of evaluations and feedback.
  • Be in good health, vitality, and physical stamina.
  • COVID-19 vaccination is required for CSSC staff (potential for medical or religious exemption as required by Indiana law).
  • Counselors must demonstrate a firm knowledge of shared values, rules, and regulations, and hold others accountable.
  • Instructors may require prior teaching or coaching experience and specific experience in a skill (e.g., coding, archery, golf).
  • Some instructor positions may require professional certification, license, or related experience (e.g., lifeguard certification, Indiana Boating License, US Sailing).
  • Naval staff must have a valid US Driver’s License.
  • Waterski staff must be 21 years of age or older with a valid US Driver’s license.
  • Horsemanship staff require equitation skills appropriate to the level assigned.
  • Administration minimum expectations may include several years of camp staff experience, strong leadership skills, and exceptional communication ability.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 1 year of college is highly preferred.
  • US Sailing certification(s) preferred for Naval staff.
  • Indiana’s Boaters license is preferred for Waterski staff.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize work experience at Culver to complete school-required internships, depending on college/university requirements for internship credit.

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of campers/students.
  • Act as a positive role model for campers/students and staff.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with all campers/students and staff.

  • Accept supervision and guidance in the form of evaluations and feedback.
  • Be in good health, vitality, and physical stamina.
  • Counselors work closely with campers/students, establish rapport, administer discipline with respect and care, and are on call 24/7 as primary caretakers.
  • Instructors provide instruction to participants for a given activity or subject, teaching associated knowledge and skills and assisting campers/students in achieving goals.
  • Naval staff are responsible for the safe, enjoyable, and effective implementation of the Naval School Curriculum and assigned Naval duties, teaching classes, coaching and assessing student performance, and supervising/officiating naval competitions.
  • Waterski staff supervise and implement water ski instruction, maintain the safety of campers/students and staff, and provide quality instruction.
  • Horsemanship staff are responsible for instruction in Balanced Seat English Equitation, Mounted Drill, and Horsemanship skills.
  • Administration provides day-to-day leadership of the program and operations, organizes and schedules classes and activities, establishes and delivers program goals, and plans and implements programs while monitoring progress.
