About The Position

In Discovery Immunology at Genentech, our goal is to create life-changing medicines for people living with inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. Working in a highly collaborative environment across Research and Early Development, we’re using new scientific approaches to find better ways to treat IBD, joint diseases, and respiratory conditions like COPD. This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site. The Opportunity Model Development: Design and run cell culture experiments using molecular biology, imaging, and bioengineering to build and characterize new disease models. COPD Research: Work toward conducting independent experiments and analyzing data to uncover the biological mechanisms behind COPD. Literature Review: Read and critically evaluate scientific papers to stay informed on the latest research relevant to your project. Scientific Collaboration: Actively participate in team meetings, seminars, and scientific discussions with Genentech researchers. Presentation: Prepare a scientific poster and present your findings to the department at the conclusion of your internship. Program Highlights Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship. Program start dates are in May/June (Summer) A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. Requirements

  • Must have attained a Master's Degree
  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student)​
  • Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Bioengineering, or a related field.
  • Lab Experience: 2+ years of research experience in an academic or biotech laboratory setting.
  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in standard wet lab techniques, including pipetting and quantitative measurements.
  • Effective Communication: A track record of sharing your work through poster or oral presentations at regional or national meetings.
  • Independence: The ability to design experiments, troubleshoot technical challenges, and work independently with appropriate guidance.
  • Driven Mindset: A proactive, motivated approach and a genuine interest in learning the fundamentals of drug discovery.

Nice To Haves

  • Specialized Lab Techniques: Experience with cell culture, differentiation, tissue dissociation, cell sorting, and aseptic technique.
  • Molecular & Cellular Analysis: Familiarity with FACS analysis (cell sorting) and RNA-based techniques.
  • Advanced Approaches: Familiarity with bioengineering methods or "omics" technologies.
  • Scientific Literacy: Experience reading and interpreting primary scientific literature.
  • Organization: Strong time-management skills and familiarity with tools like GraphPad Prism, Google Calendar, or similar platforms.
  • Values-Aligned: Someone who acts with integrity, shows courage in the face of scientific challenges, and has a passion for helping patients.
