About The Position

The Discovery Immunology and Ophthalmology Department at Genentech develops innovative therapeutics to restore, protect, and rejuvenate tissues and organs, with a focus on immune- and vision-related diseases. Working in a highly collaborative environment across Research and Early Development, the department leverages diverse modalities and cutting-edge technologies to translate foundational biology into transformative medicines for patients. This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site. The Opportunity As a Summer Intern, you will contribute to a highly innovative retinal cell therapy project and collaborate closely with researchers across Genentech.

Requirements

  • Must have attained a Master's Degree.
  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).
  • Required Majors: Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Bioengineering, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of research experience in academic and/or biotechnology laboratory settings.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills, demonstrated through poster or oral presentations at regional or national meetings.
  • Ability to design experiments, troubleshoot technical challenges, and work independently with appropriate guidance.
  • Highly motivated, proactive, and driven, with a commitment to learning in a new scientific area.
  • Interest in learning the fundamentals of drug discovery in an industry environment.

  • Experience with stem cell culture and differentiation.
  • Familiarity with bioengineering approaches and/or omics technologies.
  • Laboratory experience with tissue dissociation, cell sorting, and aseptic technique.
  • Proficiency in standard wet lab techniques, including pipetting and quantitative measurements.
  • Experience reading and interpreting scientific literature.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills; familiarity with tools such as Google Calendar, Slack, or similar platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Designing, performing, and analyzing cell culture experiments to support model development and characterization using molecular biology, imaging, and bioengineering approaches.
  • Progressively conducting experiments independently and analyzing data to elucidate mechanisms underlying age-related macular degeneration (AMD) biology.
  • Reading and critically evaluating primary scientific literature relevant to the project.
  • Actively participating in team meetings, seminars, and scientific discussions.
  • Preparing a scientific poster and presenting findings in a final departmental presentation.
