About The Position

WSG Energy Services is seeking an experienced 1st Class Power Engineer to support operations at an industrial steam plant in Cold Lake, Alberta. This position operates on a 12-hour rotating shift schedule, including both day and night shifts. The successful candidate will possess extensive experience operating, troubleshooting, and optimizing large-scale steam generation and utility systems. As a senior member of the operations team, the 1st Class Power Engineer will provide technical leadership, support operational excellence initiatives, and ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of plant equipment and processes. Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, regulatory compliance, environmental stewardship, and continuous improvement. Note: Candidates must reside in Cold Lake or be responsible for their own accommodations.

Requirements

  • Valid 1st Class Power Engineer Certificate issued in accordance with provincial regulations.
  • Minimum 10+ years of industrial operations experience, including significant experience operating large steam generation facilities, utility plants, or heavy industrial processing facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership within industrial operations environments.
  • Strong understanding of steam generation, water treatment, utility systems, process operations, and equipment reliability principles.
  • Experience with plant optimization, operational troubleshooting, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearance and pass a criminal record check.
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment while operating independently when required.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License with a satisfactory driver's abstract.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience operating Class 1 or Class 2 steam plants.
  • Experience within oil and gas, thermal oil recovery, SAGD, petrochemical, power generation, or heavy industrial facilities.
  • Previous experience in leadership, shift supervision, or senior operations roles.
  • Knowledge of process safety management (PSM) principles and risk management practices.
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and process control systems.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all client, regulatory, environmental, and safety requirements are met or exceeded.
  • Provide technical leadership and operational expertise to support plant performance and reliability objectives.
  • Support the development, review, and optimization of operating procedures, Safe Operating Practices, and training materials.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to Operations personnel and Power Engineers of all classifications.
  • Maintain an in-depth understanding of plant systems, operating parameters, equipment limitations, and process interactions.
  • Participate in operational planning, risk assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Perform and oversee safe equipment start-ups, shutdowns, and operational transitions in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Monitor plant performance and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reliability, and production.
  • Conduct and review product sampling, water treatment testing, and operational analysis.
  • Complete safety documentation, permits, incident investigations, and operational reports as required.
  • Safely isolate equipment for maintenance utilizing approved lockout/tagout and energy isolation procedures.
  • Participate in management of change (MOC), hazard assessments, and operational readiness reviews.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts for process and equipment issues and coordinate corrective actions.
  • Support maintenance planning by reviewing work scopes, permits, and safe work practices.
  • Participate in planned inspections, regulatory audits, and compliance activities.
  • Assist with major shutdowns, turnarounds, and special projects as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
