About The Position

This position involves assisting in small group and individual pupil instruction under the direction of a special education teacher. The paraeducator will help maintain discipline, assist with instructional activities, escort students, and may be required to support with toileting. The role involves working with both special education and regular students, implementing IEPs, and supervising students during recess and lunch. Additional duties include assisting with classroom assignments, copying materials, filing, preparing paperwork, and alerting teachers to observed problems. PMT (Positive Management Training) may be required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree.
  • Two years of college credit OR hold an associate's (or higher) degree; OR successful completion of a paraprofessional assessment which assesses content knowledge in mathematics, reading and writing and an understanding of how to assist in the instruction of these topics (Parapro Assessment).
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.
  • Basic knowledge and experience with job related computer hardware and software applications.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Must be able to push items of fifty (50) pounds, such as pushing children on a bike or wheelchair or moving/rearranging furniture.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • When doing heavier lifting, the employee should do so with assistance.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and peripheral vision.
