Walk me through how you would design a study to understand why users are abandoning a mobile app after the first use.
Why they ask: This tests your end-to-end research design thinking. They want to see how you move from a business problem to a research plan.

Start by clarifying the problem and exploring it before designing a study:

Define the Research Question: Before jumping to a study, I’d ask: Do we know that people are abandoning after first use (is this validated with data), or is this a hypothesis? I’d look at app analytics first to understand the drop-off pattern. Are people using the app once and never returning? Or are they using it once per session for a week then stopping?

Identify What We Need to Learn: The root cause could be multiple things: the onboarding is confusing, the app doesn’t do what users expected, they solved their problem and don’t need it again, or the interface is too complex. I wouldn’t assume anything.

Choose Mixed Methods: I’d combine qualitative and quantitative:
- Qualitative (first): Unmoderated user testing with 8-10 people who tried the app and stopped. I’d ask them to install the app fresh and think-aloud while they use it, then ask why they’d or wouldn’t come back. This tells me where friction occurs.
- Quantitative (validation): A survey with 200-300 people who installed but didn’t return, asking about their experience and reasons for not using it regularly. This tells me if what I found in interviews is common or edge case.

Timing Matters: I’d want to reach out to people who abandoned within a specific window—if it’s been three months, they might not remember why. If it’s within a week or two, the experience is fresh.

Analyze for Themes: Once I have data, I’m looking for patterns. Are 60% of people stuck on onboarding? Are 40% not seeing the value? Are some people in a different use case than we designed for? That dictates the solution.
What the interviewer is listening for: Are you systematic? Do you validate before assuming? Do you combine methods thoughtfully? Do you think about the data you need before designing the study?
