I immediately investigated instead of defending the strategy. I pulled search terms and realized broad match was capturing a ton of low-intent searches. Someone searching ‘running shoe reviews’ was getting my ad, but they weren’t in purchase mode. They were researching.

I didn’t just pause broad match and hide. I gave the client full transparency about what happened, what I learned, and the plan to fix it. I rebuilt the campaign with tighter match types and more-specific keywords, which gave us lower volume but actually profitable performance.

Looking back, I was overconfident in my initial strategy. I should have run a smaller test of the broad match approach before scaling it. Now I’m much more conservative about volume-first approaches. I test first at small scale, prove the unit economics work, then scale.

I spent two days deep-diving. I took Google’s training course, read case studies, and joined a webinar specifically about Performance Max. The more I learned, the more I realized it wasn’t just search—it was a full-funnel automated bidding system across multiple channels.

I built a small test campaign to learn hands-on. I set it up wrong the first time (wrong conversion tracking), so I debugged it. I learned by doing more than by reading. After a week, I felt confident enough to explain it to the client and set expectations appropriately.

We ran a test campaign with a portion of their budget. Performance was strong—1.8:1 ROAS in the first month. The client expanded it. I learned that the key to Performance Max is giving it clean conversion data and letting the algorithm work; it’s very different from manual bidding.
