I spent a weekend doing a deep dive: watching YouTube tutorials, reading Google’s documentation, studying how YouTube bidding strategies differ from Search, and understanding how to set up conversion tracking for YouTube Ads. The fundamentals are similar to Search, but targeting, optimization, and creative are totally different.
I ran a pilot campaign with 10% of the budget to test what I’d learned. That first campaign was mediocre because I was still learning the nuances, but I gathered data and started experimenting. I A/B tested different video lengths, different ad formats, and different audience targeting approaches. I couldn’t just say ‘your Quality Score is 3 because of landing page relevance.’ I used an analogy: ‘Think of Google like a restaurant reviewer. The reviewer reads your ad, clicks through, and checks out your landing page. If the landing page is a mess, slow to load, and doesn’t match what the ad promised, the reviewer notes that and gives you a lower score the next time your ad shows up. Lower score means you pay more and show up less often.’ That clicked for her immediately.
Then I showed her side-by-side comparisons: how we’d improve her landing pages and what would happen to her Quality Score and costs. Once she understood the cause, she was willing to invest in fixing the landing page rather than just increasing budget.”

Technical Interview Questions for PPC Managers
”Walk me through your approach to optimizing Quality Score in Google Ads.”
Why they ask: Quality Score is fundamental to Google Ads. This tests your hands-on knowledge of the platform and your understanding of Google’s ranking algorithm.
How to approach this:
Organize your answer around the three Quality Score components: expected CTR, ad relevance, and landing page experience. For each component, explain:
- What it measures
- How it impacts performance (both ad position and cost)
- Specific tactics you use to improve it
Then walk through a concrete example from your experience.
Sample answer framework:
“Quality Score has three components, and I approach each one strategically.
Expected CTR: This is about how likely your ad is to be clicked based on historical performance. I improve this by making sure ad copy is specific and compelling. I use emotional triggers, numbers, and benefit-focused language. I avoid generic ad copy. For example, instead of ‘Learn more,’ I’d say ‘See our 3-step process for cutting costs in half.’ I also make sure the ad copy matches keywords. If someone searches for ‘budget yoga classes,’ they should see the word ‘budget’ in my ad.
Ad Relevance: This is about whether the ad matches the keyword intent. I achieve this by keeping ad groups tightly themed—sometimes with just 5-10 keywords per ad group instead of 50. Every keyword, ad copy, and landing page should be aligned around one core intent. If an ad group contains keywords about both ‘running shoes’ and ‘winter boots,’ no single ad will be relevant to all of them.
Landing Page Experience: Google evaluates page load speed, mobile experience, transparency, and whether the page fulfills the promise of the ad. I work with our design team to ensure landing pages are fast, mobile-optimized, and contain the exact product or service mentioned in the ad. If the ad is about ‘red sneakers on sale,’ the landing page should show red sneakers on sale—not a generic homepage.
