“When I built a warehouse simulation, I started with face validity. I walked the operations manager through the model logic step-by-step—how orders arrive, how they’re routed to picking zones, how items are packed. She said it matched reality.
Then I set up a baseline scenario using average historical demand and compared simulation output—daily picking volume, queue lengths, labor utilization—to actual metrics. They were within about 5%, which gave me confidence.
I tested sensitivity—increasing demand by 10%, then 20%. Queue times grew approximately linearly as expected. I reduced the number of pickers to see if utilization spiked correctly. It did.
I also ran sensitivity on variability—increased demand variance—and confirmed that the model showed the expected nonlinear effect on queue times.
Finally, I ran the model from zero demand to 150% of normal demand to make sure it didn’t break and outputs remained logical across that range. When everything checks out, I’m confident the model reflects reality well enough to use for decision-making.”

”How would you approach a problem where you need to balance multiple, conflicting objectives?”
Why they’re asking: Real-world problems rarely have a single objective. They want to see if you understand multi-objective optimization.
Answer framework:

“I worked on a distribution network problem with conflicting goals: minimize cost and maximize customer service (shorter delivery times). These conflict because the most cost-efficient network might have fewer facilities, meaning longer deliveries to some areas.
I asked leadership how they wanted to balance these. They said service was critical but within reason. So I formulated it as: minimize cost, but ensure 95% of customers get two-day delivery.
I built a model with that structure. The results showed that hitting the two-day service target meant costs were about 12% higher than the absolute minimum. I then asked: what if we relaxed it to three days? Costs dropped another 7%.
By showing these tradeoff curves, leadership could make an informed decision. They chose the two-day option because the customer experience mattered more than that 12% cost increase. If I’d just optimized pure cost, they might’ve ended up with a solution they didn’t actually want.”
Tip: Show that you involve stakeholders in defining the problem, not just solving it. Present tradeoffs explicitly to help decision-making.

“I’ve built demand forecasting models using several approaches. For shorter-term forecasting (weeks to months) with strong seasonal patterns, I’ve used exponential smoothing with seasonal components—it’s computationally simple and interpretable.
For longer-term forecasting or when there’s more historical data, I’ve used ARIMA. And increasingly, I’m using machine learning approaches—gradient boosting, neural networks—when the relationship between predictors and demand is complex.
My approach is usually to test multiple methods. I split the data—train on the historical portion, validate on a holdout period. I compare methods using MAPE or RMSE and sometimes combine the best ones in an ensemble.
I was forecasting demand for a product line that had growth plus seasonality plus occasional promotional spikes. A single method struggled because the pattern was complex. I built an ensemble combining exponential smoothing and a regression model that captured promotional effects. The ensemble outperformed either method alone.
I also always ask: what drives this variable? That context shapes method choice. If it’s driven by economic factors, I might include those as regressors. If it’s driven by past values and randomness, ARIMA might be better.”
