How to think through it:
- Define what UAT is testing: It’s not finding bugs (that’s QA testing). It’s verifying that the system meets business requirements and the users can do their jobs.
- Involve the right people: Not IT people. Business people who actually do the work. They’re the experts in how the process should work.
- Create realistic scenarios: Don’t test generic features. Test the workflows people actually do. Test edge cases that come up in real life.
- Plan the timeline: UAT can’t be rushed. How long will it take? What’s the best time in your calendar to do it?
- Track issues: What’s working? What’s not? What’s a blocker for go-live? What can we live with?
Sample thought process: “I’d involve the actual people who will use the system. A warehouse manager should test inventory processes, not an IT person. I’d have them do their real work in the system. Don’t ask them to read a test case. Ask them to ‘receive a shipment’ or ‘process a customer order.’ I’d give them time to explore and try things. That’s where we find real issues. I’d also test the edge cases. What happens if you try to order more than you have in stock? What if a supplier changes? I’d track issues in a database and categorize them by severity. - Identify gaps: Where are we short? Can we upskill people or do we need contractors? How long will upskilling take?
- Plan capacity: What’s the realistic timeline given our team size? What happens if someone gets pulled away?
- Make recommendations: Do we need to adjust scope,
