About The Position

This position is responsible for leadership, oversight, development, and improvement of assigned ministry activities to the general community, including supervision of staff and volunteers.  This position also involves building relationships that bridge community members into the corps’ church fellowship and discipleship programs. The Youth Activities Coordinator will assist in carrying out The Salvation Army’s mission to serve and meet community needs with compassion and inclusivity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • At least 2+ years working in a ministry-related field
  • At least 1+ years of experience working directly with children in a structured environment
  • Must demonstrate an active faith in Jesus Christ as well as ongoing personal spiritual development
  • Ability to teach and lead people of all ages
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Willingness to actively attend and participate with The Salvation Army Church
  • Ability to have flexibility in the work schedule that includes open office hours, some evenings and weekends, and willingness to attend and participate with The Salvation Army Church worship services on Sundays
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365
  • Working knowledge of TEAMS and SharePoint
  • Willingness to learn new software as needed
  • Experience in effectively using and navigating social media platforms to support community engagement
  • Complete Safe From Harm train-the-trainer training, and keep current as needed
  • Must have and maintain a current valid chauffer’s license and pass the Salvation Army Motor Vehicle Record check (MVR); or gain chauffer’s endorsement within 60 days of hire
  • First Aide Certified

Nice To Haves

  • Additional experience working with older adults preferred
  • Prior knowledge of and experience in Salvation Army programs and ministries preferred

Responsibilities

  • Community Engagement & Program Leadership:
  • Develop and lead community outreach events and programs, in collaboration with community center director & corps ministry leadership.
  • Plan, organize, and implement daily youth enrichment activities, including academic support, arts, recreation, and social-emotional learning.
  • Coordinate activity schedules and ensure alignment with program goals and grant requirements.
  • Supervise and engage youth participants to promote positive behavior, teamwork, and leadership.
  • Support and guide after-school aides and volunteers during activities
  • Maintain appropriate staff-to-student ratios and ensure child safety at all times.
  • Monitor attendance and participation and assist with required program documentation and reporting.
  • Communicate effectively with program staff, families, and administration.
  • Ensure activities are culturally responsive, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate.
  • Assist with special events, field trips, and community engagement activities.
  • Maintain standards of the state of Michigan, childcare licensing standards, and The Salvation Army.
  • Assist with administrative tasks, promote divisional events, and provide seasonal program support.
  • Relationship Building & Community Collaboration:
  • Actively engage in outreach events, social services follow-ups, and networking to deepen community ties.
  • Attend Sunday worship services and small groups to support participant integration into church life.
  • Team Oversight & Development:
  • Supervise assigned staff and volunteers, monitor work quality, manage timecards, and participate in staff lifecycle activities.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers and program leaders.
  • Coordinate staff, manage schedules, and ensure safety and program quality.
  • Collaboration & Reporting:
  • Work closely with corps officers and leadership for program alignment.
  • Maintain accurate program statistics and provide regular reports to local groups, councils, and at staff development meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • The accrual rate is based upon years of service and approved hours worked.
