About The Position

Interns will be able to describe the benefits of regular exercise for at-risk populations, identify common barriers to exercise, and explain methods used to introduce individuals to various forms of physical activity. Interns will gain experience in a variety of Healthy Living programs at the YMCA, with a focus on evidence-based programming. This program aims to develop an intern’s skills in areas of cultural competency, adult learning principles, exercise instruction, group facilitation, and active listening through exposure to Healthy Living programs and opportunities to provide supervised assistance. Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a Community Health or Exercise Science program.
  • Must have current certifications in Adult CPR, AED, and First Aid.
  • Must have knowledge of and experience with exercise equipment and physical education principles.
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills and be professional and polite at all times.
  • Must be outgoing, approachable, and able to effectively engage and motivate program participants.
  • Must accept and demonstrate the YMCA values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • Must be self-motivated, reliable, and able to follow directions and complete tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Must have visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of equipment.
  • Must be able to stand, stoop, or kneel for extended periods of time.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the LiveStrong and Parkinson's team with functional assessments and group sessions for cancer survivors.
  • Shadow personal training and group exercise sessions to observe client engagement, exercise instruction, and program design.
  • Assist on the wellness floor by engaging members, providing general support, and maintaining a clean, safe environment.
  • Support program delivery such as “Ready, Set, Move” and other wellness initiatives.
  • Help/coordinate community health events, including scheduling and working with guest speakers.
  • Participate in YMCA community outreach events and activities
  • Contribute to creating a positive, welcoming, and inclusive environment for members and participants.
  • Be familiar with exercise classes and personal trainers, as well as YMCA membership and other activities to be an advocate for ALL programs and activities the YMCA has to offer.
