XR Chipset Project Engineer

QualcommSan Diego, CA

About The Position

Overall engineering lead for an XR (VR/AR/MR) chipset. An XR chipset comprises multiple chips that together perform the functions of an XR device (such as Application Processor, PMICs, Connectivity chips, Transceivers, and RF front end components), and associated Software/Firmware. Responsible for planning and execution of the chipset through all phases from concept to commercialization across all engineering teams, including meeting all engineering KPIs such as timeliness, stability, reliability, performance, power, etc. Works closely with chipset Program Manager, chipset Product Manager, and leads from various engineering teams to ensure delivery of hardware, software, test, documentation, and tools to enable on-time launch of customer devices in the market. Ultimately responsible for driving resolution of all engineering issues on the chipset whether within a specific subsystem, or across subsystems, functions, and chipset components. Final point of escalation for customer engineering issues. Responsible for clearly communicating engineering status of the project to executives. Works in a highly matrixed environment. This role frequently requires working with others to fulfill job responsibilities without direct authority. The responsibilities of this role include: • Works independently with little supervision. • Provides supervision to other supervisors/managers who are direct reports. • Decisions are more significant in their impact, influencing overall program or project success, finances, and/or the ability to meet objectives. Errors are not readily apparent due to the complexity of work process/product or time between decisions and results; Errors typically result in significant expenditure of time, resources, and funds to correct. • Requires verbal and written communication skills to convey complex and/or detailed information to multiple individuals/audiences with differing knowledge levels. Role may require strong negotiation and influence, communication to large groups or high-level constituents. • Overall responsibility to ensure budgets, schedules, and performance standards for functional areas and organization are realistically set and attained. Erroneous decisions, failure to achieve objectives results in significant long-term impact on the company's overall success. • Has influence over the formulation and achievement of long-term business plans and objectives. • Most tasks do not have defined steps; simultaneous use of multiple mental abilities is generally required to determine the best approach; mistakes may result in significant rework. • Exceptional creativity is needed to innovate new ideas and develop innovative products/ processes without established objectives or known parameters. • Works on abstract problems in unique situations that require intricate analysis, and evaluation of ambiguous factors. Directs the resolution of highly complex, unusual, or abstract business problems across functional or organization lines. Through assessment of intangible variables, identifies, and evaluates fundamental issues, providing strategy and direction for major functional areas. • Participates in the organization's planning process, interpreting business strategies, establishing strategic plans and objectives for multiple areas and functions. Decisions may affect entire organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field and 8+ years of Electrical, Computer, or Software Engineering or related work experience.
  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field and 7+ years of Electrical, Computer, or Software Engineering or related work experience.
  • OR PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field and 6+ years of Electrical, Computer, or Software Engineering or related work experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in one or more areas of semiconductor product development.
  • 5+ years in a technical leadership role.

Responsibilities

  • Leads discussions with senior leaders across the organization to develop the requirements and definition of large, complex XR chipsets based on expertise in engineering; expertly negotiates with leaders to secure resources and budget to carry out project plans.
  • Outlines schedules, costs, requirements, and KPIs (e.g., power, performance, reliability) from concept to commercialization; enables program management to develop and share detailed plans for highly complex chipset projects across multiple large teams; identifies new product relevant KPIs.
  • Provides direction to various team leads to oversee progress and track metrics to ensure project plans, specifications, and KPIs are being met according to timelines and budgets; makes trade-off decisions to balance schedules, costs, resources, and KPIs (e.g., power, performance).
  • Seeks to continuously improve methodologies, tools, planning, and processes in all aspects of chipset development.
  • Leverages expert understanding of all engineering areas related to chipset development and drives alignment of multiple project teams across Qualcomm to make high-level architectural and design decisions across different blocks of the chipset; oversees design and concept reviews across multiple technologies or product domains to ensure decisions align with the broader strategy/roadmap; provides recommendations to more senior stakeholders across the business; works with ambiguity or ill-defined engineering requirements, schedules, or resources.
  • Influences development of new methodology for verification of KPIs (performance, power, and quality) of all components across the chipset; provides technical oversight to multiple, large teams conducting hardware, software, or systems-level testing, verification, and validation to ensure project plans and specifications are met.
  • Organizes and drives multiple engineering teams across Qualcomm to address issues and generate product-level solutions; Leverages engineering expertise to efficiently and effectively steer cross-functional debugging and resolving the most complex and ambiguous product-level issues across various components of the chipset.
  • Oversees leaders across teams to ensure hardware, software, test, documentation, and tools are delivered on-time according to project specifications for large, novel chipset projects; oversees and drives the integration of all components into final chipset deliverable for successful product launch.
  • Provides updates to key stakeholders and guides cross-functional leaders to resolve issues throughout implementation and commercialization; owns successful chipset bring-up and resolution of customer/field issues for the product.
  • Manages customer expectations on project execution, schedules, and issues; guides product managers demonstrate and educate customers on product features and KPIs.
  • Acts as an expert resource in forward looking technologies related to industry trends, competitors' products, and advances in various engineering fields related to XR chipset products and technology; shares this information across teams and the organization; directs research topics for teams based on resources available.
