About The Position

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting for a Working Shop Foreman/Heavy Equipment Mechanic in the Great Falls Shop. This position involves the repair and maintenance of machinery and mechanical equipment, including gas and diesel engines, pumps, motors, power trains, tools, vehicles, and heavy equipment. The role also includes welding (gas, arc, and wire) and cutting metals during repairs or fabrication. The foreman will engineer, design, and fabricate tools and equipment, and modify existing equipment (such as Snow Plow Trucks) to enhance highway maintenance. Additionally, the position advises and provides technical expertise to other shop mechanics in diagnosing equipment problems, determining necessary repairs, and outlining courses of action. The foreman inspects and reviews work as directed by the shop superintendent on an as-needed basis. This role also performs various other duties assigned by the Shop Superintendent to support the Department's mission and Division objectives, including exchanging information with consultants, agency staff, and the public; providing training, education, and professional and technical assistance; directing special projects; participating in ongoing training and educational programs; and performing other directed duties.

Requirements

  • Related associate’s degree / 2 years college / Vocational training AND Three (3) years of equipment repair and operation experience at journeyman level, including any combination of heavy or light duty repair (cars, pickups, trucks, loaders, motor patrols, track-type tractors, asphalt hot plants, or other heavy equipment used for highway construction or maintenance).
  • A valid Montana CDL (Class A, Type II).
  • Alternatively: Minimum of five (5) years of equipment repair and operation experience at journeyman level, including any combination of heavy or light duty repair (cars, pickups, trucks, loaders, motor patrols, track-type tractors, asphalt hot plants, or other heavy equipment used for highway construction or maintenance).
  • Successful applicants will be required to sign a release form which authorizes the Department to obtain the applicant’s permanent driving records.
  • Compliance with Mont. Admin. R. 2.6.201, "State Vehicle Use," and MDT Policy #6.03.001, "State Vehicle Use Policy" are conditions of employment.
