About The Position

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting for a Working Shop Foreman/Heavy Equipment Mechanic in the Great Falls Shop. This position involves the repair and maintenance of various machinery and mechanical equipment, including gas and diesel engines, pumps, motors, power trains, tools, vehicles, and heavy equipment. The foreman will also perform welding (gas, arc, and wire) and metal cutting for repairs or fabrication. A key aspect of the role is to engineer, design, and fabricate new tools and equipment, and modify existing equipment, such as Snow Plow Trucks, to enhance highway maintenance. The position requires providing technical expertise and advice to other shop mechanics for diagnosing equipment problems, determining necessary repairs, and outlining courses of action. The foreman will also inspect and review work as directed by the shop superintendent on an as-needed basis. Additionally, this role includes performing a variety of other duties assigned by the Shop Superintendent to support the Department's mission and Division objectives, such as exchanging information with consultants, agency staff, and the public, providing training and technical assistance, directing special projects, and participating in ongoing training and educational programs.

Requirements

  • Related associate’s degree, 2 years college, or Vocational training AND three (3) years of equipment repair and operation experience at journeyman level.
  • OR Minimum of five (5) years of equipment repair and operation experience at journeyman level.
  • Experience must include any combination of heavy or light duty repair, such as cars, pickups, trucks, loaders, motor patrols, track-type tractors, asphalt hot plants, or other heavy equipment used for highway construction or maintenance.
  • A valid Montana CDL (Class A, Type II).
  • Compliance with Mont. Admin. R. 2.6.201, "State Vehicle Use," and MDT Policy #6.03.001, "State Vehicle Use Policy" are conditions of employment.
