About The Position

One80 Place ends and prevents homelessness throughout South Carolina with offices located in Charleston and Columbia. This position will be based in Charleston. The Shelter Director ensures the safe and effective operation of the women and family shelter at 573 Meeting St. The Shelter Director is responsible for leading staff in ensuring shelter clients basic needs are met and services are delivered in accordance with current policies and procedures, funder requirements and that align with a service intensive, low barrier model. The Shelter Director’s performance will incorporate the practice and promotion of One80 Place’s core values. The Shelter Director is expected to work varied shifts and have adequate coverage during emergency situations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required, in Human Services (social work, counseling, psychology or related field). Relevant experience will be considered in lieu of education.
  • Demonstrated experience working with indigent and/or at-risk populations.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills including basic office programs and the ability to learn and utilize appropriate database programs.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a fast-paced team.
  • Ability to effectively engage with individuals with varied barriers and backgrounds.
  • Ability to work all shifts and provide coverage when necessary
  • Ability to work during weather and other emergency situations

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with low income or indigent families preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Requires knowledge and belief in ending homelessness and overcoming barriers by providing service intensive engagement for clients to be successful.
  • Prioritize and direct work of shelter assistants to ensure the team functions effectively and efficiently to meet the needs of shelter clients.
  • Ensures that shelters are fully staffed, by developing and maintaining a work schedule that is responsive to the needs of all shelter clients.
  • Work with applicable staff to ensure the adherence to shelter rules, guidelines and policies.
  • Work with operations and facilities staff to ensure that the shelter facilities are kept in excellent condition and that shelters are safe places for staff, clients and volunteers.
  • Monitor shift and incident reports to identify matters that require resolution and trends. Ensure effective communication between shifts to all staff.
  • Plan and/or conduct groups with shelter clients on applicable topics to promote self-sufficiency and resilience.
  • Coordinate with community providers and partners in providing services within the shelter to better equip and serve One80 Place clients.
  • Engage with volunteers, donors, board members, and community members effectively to promote One80 Places mission and awareness around needs and services.
  • Conduct monthly meetings with shelter assistants for group supervision as well as provide monthly check-in with individual staff to ensure work towards mission, vision and values is occurring and to address performance and other related concerns.
  • Ensures the quality of client services by monitoring performance measures as outlined in the overall strategic plan and departmental annual plans.
  • Maintains compliance with GPD and other shelter regulatory guidelines for all policies, regulations and requirements.
  • Maintains client confidentiality by keeping a strict “need to know” policy and monitoring the handling of confidential information.
  • Promotes a safety first attitude by setting a positive example and ensuring all employees are following safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of all shelter programs’ documentation by running monthly APR’s and assigning data clean-up and correction as appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with housing programs to help identify shelter clients targeted by specific housing programs.
  • Participates actively in Program Director meetings and bi-weekly check-ins to ensure that work done and shelter services are in alignment with the mission, vision and values of the organization.
  • Assist in other shelter facilities and programs as necessary by coordinating coverage and engagement as needed.
  • Work with Senior Shelter Director and relevant shelter supervisors to ensure services are to standard and constant improvement planning takes place.
  • Participate in and/or lead staff trainings.
  • Assist in emergency/crisis situations as needed.
  • Record pertinent information in client database.
  • Other projects and duties as assigned.
