About The Position

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is a multimodal agency with a global reputation for excellence. WSDOT's Eastern Region is seeking to fill multiple non-permanent Highway Maintenance Worker positions for the winter maintenance season in Colfax, Oakesdale, Pullman, and Washtucna. The successful candidates will perform a variety of skilled tasks including operating snow removal and de-icing equipment, repairing and maintaining roadways, cleaning culverts and catch basins, removing debris and hazards, and providing traffic control to protect the traveling public and work crews. This position may also work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water, traversing in rough, steep, and uneven terrain. This position works 40 hours per week. Working days, nights, weekends, holidays, and may need to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies.

Requirements

  • Highway Maintenance: Skilled in performing highway maintenance, road construction, farming, forestry, or related experience. Ability to perform asphalt and concrete pavement repair, drainage and erosion control, roadside infrastructure repair, and professional snow plowing experience.
  • Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Ability to operate, inspect, and maintain a variety of Class A, B, or C maintenance equipment, hand tools, and power equipment. Ability to operate heavy equipment to perform snow and ice control and maintenance operations.
  • Traffic Control and Emergency Response: Ability to plan, set, and maintain traffic control in compliance with MUTCD standards, including lane closures, detours, and flagging. Ability to respond to accidents, spills, and other emergency events, and coordinate with external agencies as required.
  • Respectful Workplace: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth. The ability to take action to meet the needs of others.
  • Possession of a valid Class B or Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) without air brake restriction.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water.

Nice To Haves

  • Highway Maintenance Expertise: Proficient in performing highway maintenance, roadway construction, heavy equipment operation, or related work in settings such as farming, timber operations, construction, or professional snow plowing experience.
  • Traffic Control Experience: Demonstrated experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.
  • Education and Foundational Knowledge: A high school diploma, GED certificate, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Proficiently operate a variety of heavy equipment to perform snow and ice control, including applying anti-icing compounds, removing snow and ice from road surfaces, loading and hauling materials, and maintaining stockpile sites.
  • Perform asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair, including applying asphalt, concrete, and other synthetic materials.
  • Maintain and repair roadside infrastructure such as drainage systems, guardrails, fences, impact attenuators, signs, and landscaped areas.
  • Respond to emergencies by establishing traffic control in compliance with MUTCD standards, acting as first responder at accident scenes, spills, and natural events, and coordinating with external agencies.
  • Perform traffic control operations, including lane closures, detours, and flagging, to ensure safety during maintenance and emergency response activities.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and minor repairs, including servicing hand tools, chainsaws, vehicles, and heavy equipment.
  • Assist with cleanup activities such as debris removal, litter pickup, and the safe cleanup of unlawful dwellings, including hazardous substances and biohazards.
