About The Position

The Office of the County Engineer provides a variety of important services to the traveling public. These are largely funded by the purchase of license plates and by gasoline taxes. There are 423 bridges and over 500 miles of public right of way - all the responsibility of the County Engineer. These responsibilities include design, construction, inspection, maintenance, and study which result in safety improvements or regulations in compliance with State law. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under general supervision, the Highway Maintenance Worker performs general highway maintenance duties, repairs and installs guardrails, cuts shrubs and trees, mows grass, removes refuse and trash, assists in snow and ice removal activities, operates center-line machine and various other equipment, fabricates, installs, maintains and repairs road signs, operates tractor mower, performs routine maintenance and repair on trucks.

Requirements

  • Completion of secondary education or equivalent (high school diploma or GED) and one (1) year work experience in road construction, erecting, installing and repairing roadway markings and signs and/or in the painting of traffic control lines and pavement traffic messages, maintenance or repair or vehicle and/or equipment maintenance and repair; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Must possess a valid state of residency driver’s license
  • Must remain insurable under the County’s vehicle insurance policy
  • Must have or be able to obtain within the first ninety (90) calendar days of appointment, a valid Class A - Commercial Driver's License issued by the state of residency

Responsibilities

  • Performs general highway maintenance duties (e.g., cuts brush, shrubs and trees; mows grass; removes refuse and trash; \ Patches and seals roadways and repairs berms; Repairs and installs guardrails, barricades, walls, inlets, headwalls, manholes, etc.; Digs ditches and installs culverts, pipes, guardrails, etc.)
  • Operates various equipment (e.g., intersection truck, hand paint machine, etc.)
  • Flags on-going traffic at construction sites; installs barricades/signs as directed
  • Assists in snow and ice removal activities, loads truck with front end loader, drives dump truck (including tandem axle) to spread salt or plow snow
  • Operates 2-way radio
  • Performs routine maintenance and repair on trucks
  • Performs seasonal maintenance and repairs on pavement marking equipment during winter months
  • Repairs and installs road signs
  • Drives pick-up truck
  • Operates light and handheld equipment (e.g., chain saw, air compressor, shovels, picks, jackhammer, etc.)
  • Manufactures and repairs signs (i.e., use computers to design traffic signs following ODOT standards; fabricates signs using pressure roller; operates small roller; uses necessary hand tools.
  • Completes routine forms recording man-hours, materials, equipment, etc. used on projects; keeps stockroom books, answers telephone, maintains district logs; completes foreman's report documenting work performed
  • Attends meetings and serves on committees, as directed
  • Attends training and seminars, as directed
  • Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance
  • Due to the nature of the job, when scheduled for on-call assignment, the Highway Maintenance Worker must be available to return to work after normal work hours or on weekends and/or holidays when called to do so
  • Performs other duties as assigned
