Age Specific Responsibility Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned department. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the department’s policies and procedures. Summary The Wheelchair and Adaptive Sports Intern is responsible for development and implementation of wheelchair and adaptive sports programs for children, adolescents and adults with disabilities in the West Michigan area. This position includes volunteer supervision, collaboration with community recreation programs and provides administrative support to the department.

Requirements

  • Studying in sports management, recreational therapy or related field.
  • Updated and current certification/licensure dependent on educational degree.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license.
  • Experience supervising volunteers.
  • Knowledge and experience in adapting equipment & leisure education.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills and ability to relate well with children, parents, adults and community professionals/personnel.
  • Ability to function autonomously.
  • Maintains membership in professional association.

Responsibilities

  • Provides adaptive sports and recreation programs.
  • Manages all implementation aspects of teams, classes, clinics and special events; includes the management of budget for all aspects.
  • Identifies need for adaptive sports & leisure programming for youth and adults with disabilities in the community & develops and implements adaptive sports programs accordingly.
  • Structures programs/activities to meet specific adaptive leisure or sports goals of individuals or groups of clients served by the program/activity. Must work some evenings and weekends.
  • Collaborates with community recreation programs to implement and further develop adaptive sport opportunities for local youth and adults with disabilities.
  • Provides coaching and instruction on technique, equipment, and other items for participants in various community programs.
  • Assists associations in planning and running sport clinics.
  • Seeks opportunities to collaborate with existing community agencies to develop adapted sport programs.
  • Provides supervision and education to volunteers as appropriate.
  • Keeps inpatient, outpatient and TR staff informed of adapted sports opportunities available to youth and adults in the West Michigan area.
  • Supervise student interns and fieldworkers
  • Develops, reviews and revises policies and procedures specific to wheelchair and adapted sport programs in conjunction with supervisor.
  • Advises supervisor of need for supplies, personnel, equipment repair, and other matters as necessary for job performance.
  • Works closely with the Mary Free Bed Foundation to provide data and collaborate on narrative for fundraising requests
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service and standards of behaviors as well as encourages, coaches, and monitors the same in team members. This individual should consistently promote teamwork and direct communication with co-workers and deal discretely and sensitively with confidential information.
  • Contribute by identifying problems and seeking solutions. Promote patient/family satisfaction where possible; participates in departmental efforts to monitor and report customer service.
