About The Position

This position involves constructing and rebuilding a variety of difficult and complicated patterns, including those for multi-stage pumps, complex pumps, machine parts, jigs, and models for development or experimental work. The role requires working to blueprint or diagram dimensions for close-fit parts, making necessary shrinkage allowances for different metals to be cast. Responsibilities also include assembling parts, mounting patterns, building gates and accessory equipment, and ensuring satisfactory castings from the patterns. The individual may suggest changes to improve manufacturing processes, make core boxes, dryers, pattern layouts, and match plates, and perform difficult repairs. The Pattern Maker C is expected to construct the complete range of pump patterns and may occasionally check the work of other pattern makers. Other miscellaneous work may also be required, with a strong emphasis on safety consciousness.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of pattern making principles and practices
  • Considerable judgment required in developing approaches and making adjustments
  • Ability to work without finished measurements and follow only a general objective in some cases
  • Understand the working principles of pump operation
  • Thorough knowledge of foundry methods and practices
  • Familiarity with machine shop practices
  • Ability to use shop mathematics, handbook formulas, and be familiar with ordinary and shrink rules and other measuring instruments
  • Ability to work from complicated drawings, sketched and samples
  • Education equivalent to partial technical high school plus four (4) years wood pattern making apprenticeship or trade training
  • Initiative necessary to successfully perform functional responsibilities
  • Ability to properly plan details of pattern or tool in process
  • Ability to work independently towards objectives, receiving only general direction and guidance
  • Ability to make decisions within standards widely accepted in the trade
