About The Position

Concord Recreation is seeking a Head Lifeguard for its Waterfront program. They will manage lifeguard operations, supervise lifeguards on duty, watch waterfront activities, prevents and addresses dangerous situations, and responds to people in need of aid. Performs varied and responsible duties requiring a thorough knowledge of departmental operations and the exercise of judgment and initiative in completing tasks, particularly in situations not clearly defined by precedent or established procedures. Work schedule is 37.5 hours per week, schedule varies with shifts ranging from 9:00am-7:30pm and set by Aquatics Manager, from May 23– August 16, 2026. Pay range: $22.00 - $26.53/hour; starting pay based on qualifications. Applications will continue to be accepted until the position is filled. Under the general supervision of the the Waterfront Director and Aquatics Supervisor, manages lifeguard operations, supervises lifeguards on duty, watches pool/waterfront activities, prevents and addresses dangerous situations, and responds to people in need of aid. Responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under the direction and control of the position. Performs varied and responsible duties requiring a thorough knowledge of departmental operations and the exercise of judgment and initiative in completing tasks, particularly in situations not clearly defined by precedent or established procedures. Incumbent is called upon to handle a significant amount of details, each varying from the other in substance and content, requiring incumbent to approach workload with flexibility.

Requirements

  • High School education and one to three years lifeguarding and/or pool supervision experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • American Red Cross Certification in Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license, with a safe driving record and ability to provide personal vehicle for occasional transportation during work hours.
  • Working knowledge of multi-pool aquatic facility, procedures and equipment.
  • Thorough working knowledge of ability to perform lifesaving techniques, CPR and First Aid. Ability to swim.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all members of the public, including children and young adults, in a courteous and tactful manner and to fairly and tactfully enforce facility rules and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Waterfront Director overseeing the activities of lifeguards, instructors, coaches, and other program providers at pond site to ensure safety protocols are being followed; addresses observed issues promptly; advises management of problems, violations, and areas for improvement related to policies and procedures.
  • Supervises lifeguards, ensuring all work is performed in compliance with established policies and procedures and applicable safety regulations; including monitoring bathrooms, debris and eating areas.
  • Maintains watchfulness over the pond to prevent dangerous situations.
  • Monitors and assists swimmers and enforces regulations.
  • Provides basic first aid.
  • Performs rescue if appropriate, calls for help, provides emergency care, interviews witnesses, and files reports.
  • Assists in the daily opening of the waterfront, tests pools for proper chlorine and pH levels, and sets up lanes.
  • Assists in the daily closing of the waterfront. Checks facilities for vacancy at the end of the day; picks up any possessions left behind.
  • Performs weekly tests of all emergency call boxes with the Concord Police Department to ensure proper connection and audibility.
  • Performs special projects and related responsibilities as initiated and requested.
  • Performs other related duties as required, directed or as the situation dictates.
  • Regular attendance at the workplace is required.
  • Addresses all environmental, guest and staff concerns effectively and efficiently.
  • Maintains beach policies and procedures to ensure professional standards of operation.
  • Makes weather-related decisions in coordination with the Aquatics Program Manager and Recreation Supervisor.
  • Oversees beachfront office operations including all financial transactions and daily reconciliation.
  • Conducts a daily check of facility for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
  • Guarantees adequate coverage of the swim area by lifeguards during all hours of operation.
  • Makes sure all lifeguards are wearing appropriate uniforms
  • Checks members in, sells memberships, collects, processes, tracks and logs all cash/card payment for daily guest passes.
