About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Centennial Beach Manager, the Head Lifeguard is responsible for the day-to-day safety of all Centennial Beach patrons. This includes the supervision of the Lifeguard staff and their execution of lifeguarding duties.

Requirements

  • Ability to maintain a high level of readiness and preparedness in handling emergency situations.
  • Ability to display professionalism with patrons.
  • Ability to address complaints and resolve concerns.
  • Minimum two (2) years of lifeguarding experience at Centennial Beach or comparable aquatic facility, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Full Facility Lifeguard status required.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain, through Naperville Park District instruction, the Special Facilities Lifeguard Ellis & Associates certification, including First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, Scuba certification as required by departmental needs.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Subject to both office and outside environmental conditions.
  • Subject to modified/flexible work schedules.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and/or move objects weighing ≤ 30 lbs. on a weekly basis. Lifting assistance is required when lifting > 30 lbs.
  • Vision and sight (corrected, if necessary) to perform essential functions of the job.
  • Regular onsite attendance is an essential function of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Manages work of Lifeguard staff, including planning, assigning, scheduling, reviewing work, and ensuring safety standards. Is responsible for training, developing, and reviewing performance.
  • Foster a team environment among Lifeguard staff, and between Lifeguards and other Centennial Beach staff.
  • Ensure public safety by monitoring all depths of water and areas within Centennial Beach.
  • Prevent accidents by managing guests, enforcing rules, scanning for swimmers in distress or drowning, and directing weak swimmers to remain in shallow water.
  • Manage aquatic emergencies and communicate with entire beach staff.
  • Exercise prompt and professional judgment in administering rule enforcement for those who violate Beach safety rules. Consult with the Centennial Beach Manager in cases of disciplinary actions for patrons.
  • Initiate and participate in safety beach dives with Lifeguard staff before opening and after facility is closed each day.
  • Instruct or participate in pre-season training and weekly in-service training.
  • Prepare daily beach inspections and daily activity logs.
  • Maintain open communication with the Centennial Beach Manager and Aquatics Manager regarding facility and Lifeguard operations. Evaluate and continually improve processes and procedures to increase efficiency.
  • Inspect, inventory, and initiate requests for purchases and repairs of program equipment and supplies to the Centennial Beach Manager.
  • Perform general maintenance and janitorial duties to maintain a safe, clean, and friendly environment for guests, co-workers, and the public. Perform general chemical testing and chemical system monitoring.
  • Maintain proper care of safety equipment including Scuba, AED, and oxygen tanks.
  • Maintain Lifeguard staff records including licenses, Ellis & Associates required paperwork, and any testing information.
  • Demonstrate and support District customer service standards.
  • Respond to all customer comments and inquiries in a timely fashion.
  • Other duties as assigned.
