About The Position

Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey is looking for energetic, fun, organized, and caring staff to provide memorable experiences to girls in a safe and engaging Summer Camp environment! Lake Rickabear Day Camp sits on 332 acres of land including a beautiful 40-acre, spring-fed lake, perfect for swimming, pedal boating, paddle boarding, and row boating. The Waterfront Director is responsible for the overall coordination and implementation of waterfront activities that are fun, safe and appropriate to campers' ages and abilities They also ensure compliance with GSUSA, NJ Youth Safety Act: Department of Health and ACA standards. They are responsible for integrating waterfront activities with unit plans and other specialized camp events and will direct and supervise the waterfront staff. Immediate Supervisor: Camp Director

Requirements

  • Minimum Age: 21
  • Current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED with American Red Cross Waterfront Skills and Lifeguard Management. WSI certification is preferred.
  • Proven leadership and experience in waterfront programs, ability to organize waterfront programs, train and supervise waterfront staff.
  • Individuals must be safety conscious and have sound judgment.
  • Walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching and ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to swim proficiently and demonstrate water rescue skills in accordance with applicable certification standards.
  • Ability to enter and exit the water quickly and safely, including climbing ladders and navigating wet, slippery surfaces.
  • Ability to respond rapidly in emergency situations, including performing water rescues, CPR, and first aid.
  • Ability to work outdoors for prolonged periods in varying weather conditions, including heat and humidity.
  • Adequate vision (with or without corrective lenses) and hearing to monitor swimmers, identify potential safety hazards, and respond to verbal and auditory signals.
  • Must be able to work in a rustic camp environment with limited access to electricity, cell phone service and internet.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates all waterfront and boating activities within the guidelines of the American Red Cross, Girl Scout Safety-Wise, NJ Youth Safety Act: NJ Department of Health, the ACA, and the CDC.
  • Attends all sessions required for the role at Pre-Camp Orientation.
  • Enforces waterfront safety measures for every person in camp (including staff, visitors, and campers) in line with Girl Scout, ACA, ARC and NJ Youth Camp Standards.
  • Reports accidents to the Nurse and/or Camp Director promptly.
  • Supervises and assigns work to all waterfront staff (swimming and boating).
  • Maintains proper camper/staff ratios according to all standards.
  • Meets with Camp Director and necessary staff to discuss problems, changes, or make suggestions related to waterfront activities, and personnel problems/changes.
  • Responsible for care and use of all waterfront equipment and requisitions necessary repairs.
  • Plans and conducts special waterfront events along with the Program Director.
  • Conducts lost swimmer rescue drills, in-service training and staff meetings weekly.
  • Maintains current American Red Cross swimming skill requirements, certification requirement (for swim lessons and ARC courses) and documentation of those related activities at Lake Rickabear Day Camp.
  • Takes a pre- and post-camp inventory of all waterfront equipment. Makes needs request to the Camp Director.
  • Ensures that the entire waterfront (swimming and boating areas) is clean, and orderly (beach and boating areas must be free from trash and debris).
  • Follow all procedures established in the Camp Communicable Disease Plan to mitigate risks associated with communicable diseases.
  • Conducts opening and closing site inspection of equipment, life jackets, caps, buddy system, swimming records, boats.
  • Promotes high camper and staff morale.
  • Check water depths and mark depths on docks.
  • Submits written seasonal report of waterfront area and activities.
  • Must be able to stay and sleep over for at least one out of the three overnights
  • Must be able to stay at camp until the end of campfire for the overnights not staying overnight for.
  • Performs other duties as requested by the Camp Director.
